2002 Explorer Tranny Problem

2002 Explorer Tranny Problem
I am normally in the 6.0 diesel forums but I'm here with a question about my dads 2002 Eddie Bauer Explorer with a 4.6 V8.
It is banging between 2nd and 3rd gear. The o/d and check transmission lights came on.
It seems the transmission needs to be rebuilt, but my question is - is there a heavy duty rebuild kit for these transmissions?
This truck is used for towing an RV trailer and I'm thinking if a heavy duty rebuild kit is available, it might be the way to go.

im not sure there is a 'heavy duty" kit, but there are several upgrade parts. this is an electronic shift transmission. you can get crud into the valve spools and make it shift "bad" you can have wear in the piston bore and get excessive leakage. THe bore can be sleeved, and the shift solenoids can be upgraded, in addition to other parts.
