I would go with the 04 over the 01. The 02 and up V10s has more threads on the cylinder heads for the spark plugs. The earlier V10s has that spitting plugs issue.

Its not a bad thing, 20G's a lot of loot . HaHa,
When I was shopping for my Ex, (& this was only a couple weeks ago) the dealers would get pissed when I climbed under the truck with a rag & a flash light. Good thing I did - cos this 1ex was off roaded & the previous owner never heard of rock guaards.
When I pulled the fuse panel off HE ALMOST THREW me out HAHAHA.
F! Em
Hmmmm guess you have more time then i do. Just bust'n ya.
Lord i should have never mentioned "Bugs" on here. All vehicles have or had bugs to work out over the years. These trucks have very few but the plug issue that was mentioned by another use one of them. and there are bugs in things other then engines. Thats all i was say'n. and the other comments about rubber / seal etc drying up is on the money .

I have an 04 Excursion with 70K miles and I have had not 1 thing go wrong with the truck itself. Not one single thing.
Now the 6.0 and 5spd. trans. under the hood that's a whole other story!
For some reason the reports do not come up for me, just a page asking for money to see the reports.

I guess b/c it's a subscription. I can't copy/paste the graphics either. In short, the 2001 gets red dots and half-red dots for reliability while the 2004 gets black dots for engine, major and engine, minor reliability issues. I know this is for those who only report the probs but interesting none the less. Maybe more were made/bought in later years so that skews the data.

Good point, do you have photos of the Ex's? if so post em
I see what you are saying with the "Reliability History & Common Problems" section
Engine, Electrical & Paint, for the 04 Major reliability problems its saying. Interesting
Did you read their model summary? their opinions may have been skewed from the start.
The enormous Excursion was introduced for 2000. Derived from the Ford "SuperDuty" pickup-truck chassis, the Excursion offers V8, V8 turbodiesel, and V10 engines. The V10 we tested delivered just adequate oomph, but it slurped down more than a gallon of fuel while covering just 10 miles of mixed-road driving. The ride is stiff, bouncy, and uncomfortable. The Excursion's vast bulk makes it difficult to hold in a traffic lane, and its slow and vague steering demands constant attention. The brakes are inferior. A huge interior, a commanding view out, roomy three-row seating, and tremendous towing capacity are among this model's few virtues. 2005 was its final year.
