Yes or No Answer...

I think I am looking at too many issues. So to simplify the matter, I need your opinion please.

I am buying a 2001 X with 8,000 miles, a V-10 and a 3.73 rear. In your opinion will it safely tow a TT at 8800 lbs and a tongue weight of 1000 lbs. These numbers are absolute MAX and may be lower.

Thanks for your patience and advice!

THD

Yes. You'll need a weight distributing hitch.

How the heck did you find an Excursion with 8,000 miles!? Or was that a typo?

No typo. 8 K.
Yep, I use a WD hitch with my current setup and will have to get another one for the bigger TT.
THANKS!

Yes. EASILY.

It may be lower, but you can certainly go higher. A lot higher.

Wow. Thanks. You make me feel a lot better. I thought I was getting close with the 3.73 rear instead of the 4.30.
Guess I'll close the deal on the X.

Like I posted over on RV.net, you will not like towing 9k lbs with the 3.73`s. the truck will work hard doing it. it`s not the weight that is the issue, but the frontal area of the trailer. our trailer weighs in at approx. 9200lbs and is 11.5ft tall. towing with the 3.73`s was a pain. and no you can`t just run in 3rd to make up for the difference, like someone mentioned, because that doesn`t change the gear ratio inside the trans like a ring and pinion swap will! I would definitely budget for some gears. believe me I know. I went from 3.73`s to 4.30`s and the difference was night and day. sure you can tow it, but you wont be happy.

What he said plus plan on single digit fuel mileage with V10 when towing. I don't have 4.30 gear experience with my X but with previous vehicles, it was a huge difference.

They only way you may be happy with 3.73 gears in a V10 is if you primarily pull on flat road. The first 3% to 5% five mile grade you have to pull will burst your happiness bubble.

Also, don't know if you are looking at a 2WD or 4X4. A 4X4 is going to be very expensive to convert from 3.73 to 4.10 or 4.30. FWIW.

Should be ~$750 per axle to re-gear at good shop.

What kind of shop does that? Dealerships or elsewhere?

Powertrain or drivetrain shop. The one here is called Jackson Powertrain. Got the gears on my Durango swapped for almost exactly $750 including tax. Went from 3.55:1 to 4.56:1!!! Way fun to drive now. hehe

I think you'd pay WAY more than that at the dealership if they would even do it.

Haven't completely agreed yet but it will be between $16-17 K
My only concern at this point is the hitches were rated lower in 2001.
I also have a 2004 with 40 K miles for $19 K on the table.
Decisions, decisions....
