2001 X with V-10 3.73 Limited. Leather interior etc.
or
2004 X with V-10 3.73 Eddie Bauer Leather, DVD etc
Both have 2 bench seats in back. Both are in excellent shape.
It sounds like you cant do wrong with either one,
an 01 EX with 8 THOUSAND MILES?? its a Unicorn, you will never see it again
NADA says its worth about 13K its worth much more, just make sure you get the stale gas out of it ifs been sitting.
04 EX with 40 THOUSAND MILES is another steal, NADA has it worth around 20K but it will sell for more.
The 04 has more options, but you cant go wrong with either close your eyes & point.
Is there one that is cleaner than the other?

The 2001 is slightly cleaner. A 70 year old bought it, took 2 trips to Florida and church on Sunday's, so it's immaculate. But the 2004 is spotless as well, just a little more use on the seats etc.
Why so? I'd love to hear your reasons. Another voice is always welcome. The difference in hitch weights wouldn't bother you?
I do not think it would,
You are getting the 01 cheaper than the 04 and for all intensive purposes the truck is brand new. 8 thousand miles, I would upgrade from the 373's to the 430's and you still have a new rig.
In my opinion they are both great trucks but 8 thousand miles can not be beat.
What would half of us give to have our Ex's at 8k right now?

Thanks for your thoughts. What do you think of the mod of 373 to 430? I would hate to do something I'd regret. Is it safe? Will it be as reliable as the stock 373? Mods scare me a bit.

Gears are very safe and installing lower gears (higher number) will reduce the strain on ALL drivetrain components and make towing heavy loads easier. As long as you have someone that knows what they are doing and is using quality parts you will be fine. If this is something you want to do, just go talk to a few shops to get a feel for them.
Sorry, I didn`t get back to your pm over on RV.net. and I just came across it here also. Yes the 3.73-4.30 swap is safe to do, but unless you are very mechanically inclined i.e. you can do more than brakes and tuneups, I`m talking rebuilding motors or transmissions. then I would highly recomend you find a good 4WD shop to have it done. the cost is around $1500 give or take a couple hundred bucks, you need to have both front and rear axles done!. but I see you are only going to tow the bigger trailer maybe once! then I wouldn`t bother with the swap. I did it because we tow our TT alot!!! and I didn`t like how it towed with the 3.73`s, very sluggish and low on power (Which I contribute to the higher profile). my X gained .5-1mpg around town and almost 1 mpg while towing, I lost about .5 not towing at 70mph. I get 7.5-8 towing and 12.5 combined around town, 14.5 empty at 70. these numbers are approx.
Stewart, I don`t beleive the X ever got the 3 Valve motors!
I once bought a Pickup that was 10 years old with only 11K miles from an elderly man too! Keep in mind that even though the older Ex has fewer miles it is older. I had tons of issues with that 10 year old pickup, like, electrical, dried up rubber parts etc. The newer Ex might actually have fewer issues than an older lower mile Ex. Was the older Ex garaged or did it sit outside.

Oh dear Lord......I'm not doing it myself. I have 2 tranny shops in the area that would do that stuff. Trucks and SUV's
I'm not towing the big fella much but might be down the road. Just take it to/from seasonal site and to dealer if needs work. As long as I can pull it for that, I'll leave the 373 alone.

Was kept in the garage but i can't confirm that. What can I look for to check for probs?
