I'm looking to replace my Ranger and I've worked out my "dream truck" but it turns out its gonna be hard to find. I'm looking for a '97-'03, F150, 5.4l, 5 speed, 4x4, FX4, single cab, step side. Can anyone tell me if this truck was offered from the factory? Also, is there a general consensus on which year is the best to buy a 5.4 or are they generally equal?

As far as the best 5.4, go with a 2000 model or later. They have the PI heads and about 30 more hp. I'm sure that truck exists, but good luck finding it. About the only thing I was able to find a 5 speed in for those year models was a base xl v6.
sorry to say... but the 5.4 only came with an auto behind it. you could get one and put a 5 speed on it... but try and find like an allison or something along those lines because the 5.4 is a little much for the stock 5 speed.
i cant remember if you can get a 250LD with a 5.4 manual you should check for that
i hadnt thought of that one. that may be a place to look but in the regular 150s im 99 percent sure it didnt happen. i dont think this 5 speed is the same as the older ones, but im not sure. i know its been discussed before, but i cant find the thread

I was looking at buying one a few years ago and I saw a ton of v6's and a few 4.6's with the 5 speed, but I didn't see any 5.4's. I wasn't sure if it was because they didn't make them or if they were just really rare.
Thanks for the info, is the stock 5 speed for these trucks the ZF5 as in the earlier models?
If I remember correctly, the zf5 was never offered in the 150. That was the heavy duty tranny in the 250 and up. The 150(OBS at least) had the mazda 5 speed. To put a 5 speed in it I would think you could take a zf5 out of a 250/350 and bolt it right in. Autos and 5 speeds use a different computer, and if the 150 never came with a manual 5.4 you may have issues there if the computer from a 250 wouldn't work in it.
Guess I could find a 5.4 and manual out of a '99 ^ and swap it in. Lotta work though..
I have swapped a lot of autos over to 5 speeds in Mustangs and it's an easy fix for them. That's as simple as changing cross members, hooking the clutch cable up, changing the pedal assembly, putting the new tranny in and you're good to go. For a truck it's a totally different story and may be more work than you would want to do. With the shifter for the auto being on the steering column that means you have to cut a hole in the floor for the manual, change the steering column and covers, change the instrument cluster(to get rid of the p-r-n-d space) and I am sure I am leaving other stuff out.
You can get by with the stock steering column and instrument cluster if you don't mind having holes and letters that shouldn't be there, but it's a matter of how professional you want the job to look.
So now that I know there are no 5.4 manuals. How about 4.6 with a manual in the truck originally described?
Just curious, but is the fx4 a "need" or a "want" and what for? When looking for a specific truck, especially a manual, you may have to look at what is more important to you and do without certain things. The fx4 has skidplates(which are useless unless you plan on doing major off roading), rancho shocks(you can buy yourself) and slightly larger tires(you can also buy yourself). Other than that, the differences are purely cosmetic(decal, bumper color, etc).
I also understood the FX4 came with limited slip diffs front and rear from Ford. While I know I can do these things myself, of course, it was a want. Originally stated as my "dream truck" For example, I even have a color in mind...
You can get all the FX4 options in a truck without it being an FX4, IIRC a trailer package, skid plates and LS is all you get extra. At the time you could order a truck with the options cheaper than the FX4 package would have cost. With an older used truck the LS is probably going to be shot anyway so I wouldn't set my heart on it needing that stock. Also the FX4 package was the Off Road package until '00 or '01 somewhere around there. You should be able to find a 4.6L with all the options you want.
