Sell or Scrap?

So I have a hood and a tailgate from my 08 F350 that have very light damage from two separate accidents. Both could be used again with some elbow grease. Should I attempt to sell these or would scrapping them pay off? I know the skin on the hood is aluminum, im sure the reinforcements are steel though, any one know if I have to separate these to scrap them?

EDIT: BTW, both accidents were a Chevy 2500 HD hitting me... the one that rear ended me was a 2007 and he had so much damage it was totaled according to the adjuster.

I would figure out how much you would get for them in scrap (plus you have to haul it in) Then try listing it on craigslist or other free classifieds and see if you can get more for it. If you only post it on free sites nothing to loose try posting on classified section of FTE to.

I'll bet there are trucks out there with much worse tailgate damage than that same goes for hood.

No frame damage... the receiver/hitch/bumper/tailgate took it all. I had my three-way hitch in the receiver when I was hit and it broke off in the Chevy's engine block (probably one of the main factors in totaling the truck). The Chevy's front frame collapsed in and down, the front hooks were basically looking at one another and the IFS was jacked up.

I know it sounds funny, but the kid driving the Chev was more upset that his truck looked the way it did and mine was "ok" than the fact that he was at fault and was ticketed for several offenses, one being reckless driving. He was real salty that a FORD destroyed his truck. I didn't laugh about that in front of him, but my girl and I got a good chuckle over beers after it was all over.

Scrap value is always higher if you separate the different metals. But really, the scrap value on even an aluminum hood is going to be very low. Probably would not pay your fuel to drive to the recycler. But if you've got enough other stuff to go, then why not.

I would probably start with Craigslist and offer them to anyone who is willing to pick them up.

I assume you were insured??? How is it that you got to keep those items?

Tailgate looks fine to me? Lots of guys are after the tailgates off the newer trucks I'm sure you could sell it for a good price.

I am insured, but due to where the accident occurred his insurance had to pay, MD does not have no fault. The body shop here in Pittsburgh let me take the parts, they just offered them to me because I was going to take the Ford emblem off the tailgate for my truck shrine in the man room (my woman calls it the basement).

The accident to the hood was a development's property plow/salt truck that backed the salt hopper into my grill while i was parked an hour after I got the estimate for the rear end. I assume, since they paid for the repairs without going through insurance that it entitled me to the return of my bad parts...

In short, I didn't know I wasn't supposed to get them.
Either way, I was hoping to make a buck so it would pay for part of the Cherry Bomb muffler and T304 piping Im buying.

Chase is right about the tailgate. It's wrinkled around the emblem, which I missed on first view. I thought we were looking at the hitch and bumper. That tailgate is worth something to someone. I would still start with Craigslist, and ask for a hundred or two. The bumper could probably be straightened as well.

why not have them fixed at a high school or trade school auto body shop and then keep them as spares? then if something ever happens again you do have some replacement parts.

It looks like that has a MAN step in the tail gate, if so I'm sure somebody would want it even with slight damage.

actually looks like it would be fairly easy to pop out was any of the hardware bent like where it attaches to bed or the locks?

I guess I always look at my truck as a tool yeah I like it to look good but if that was all that was wrong with the tailgate I wold leave it on there and put the money the insurance company was going to pay out for the repair or replacement towards the truck like by adding locker or new tires.

I'd be interested in the tailgate if you were closer. Ever come out this way?

You will not get much of anything for scrap. Last I checked aluminum was around $.30 a pound. If they were made of copper or brass you would do ok. The tailgate would definatley be worth some coin to see it even with minor damage, the hood not so much.
