93 ford front disc rear drum. 4-6 inch pieces missing from the drums on the lip which goes over the backing plate. Would this cause vibration while driving but not applying the brake?
Please elaborate. My daughter and I noticed a definite difference with the new drums. So did I just get lucky and put 2 out of balance tires on so they cancel each other out... possible but unlikely.
Thanks
Jim

Reason: correct a brain fart meant to say drums not rotors
The reason I posted is because a guy I work with stated as mark a. did "no". My co worker says it is to close to the center to have any marked effect. I do not believe this is true. In any case myself and my daughter noticed a difference. Bottom line is it is better and rides like a dream so I guess I really do not care about the physics just the results.
Well he's partially right....the closer to center it is the less of an imbalance it will cause...but if its missing enough....yes it will cause a vibration.....if it didn't matter...they wouldn't balance rotors and drums to begin with...
Yes it will I have experienced this first had when my brake lost about inch wide strip about 4 inches long in the same place yours did. I have no idea why it broke, just hit the brakes and heard a bag like throwing some gravel out of a tire but louder. It acted just like losing a wheel weight. It creates an imbalance if it spins it needs to be balanced.

I would be less concerned about the vibration and more concerned about driving a vehicle with broken brake parts on it. Doesn't sound like a very smart idea.
Well that outside lip that he's talking about is basically there to keep crap from building up in the drum......yes in the long run it could cause a problem but it doesn't actually affect the strength.....then again....if thats cracked....whats the condition of the rest of the drum

? like I knew it was that way and just kept driving it. I assumed the vibration was something else. I had the drive shaft rebalanced and also had the wheels rebalanced. Neither of these made a difference. When I found it I replaced both drums. No other damage was evident. I did notice today as I looked at them lying on the scrap pile one is missing the balance weight.
Well I had been driving it after a few years of it being parked. As I was resurrecting it I decide to replace the life time shocks. during the replacement of the shocks was when I found the bad drums. I have since swapped the wheels with my daughters 92 and my baby rides like a dream. Must have had a bad wheel also. Now if that occasional rumbling noise on start up would just go away...
