ok so i have been searching and havent been able to find any mention of the weight of a 4.9l. i know they are pretty heavy but would like to know just how heavy. Also i was wondering a good length on them. I have one tore down in the parts trailer at home but im 5 hours away at college, and im starting to consider a 4.9l swap into my little truck.
thanks guys
~ 60lbs less than a 302 and ~ 3 inch's longer. ~ 2-3in taller. 4" bore 3.98 stroke. Puff it up a bit and you get the same hp as stock 302 and more torque at a lower rpm and a wider range curve. If I can find my link I will post it. HTH
ok i found one site that said a 302 long block weighs in at around 500, so that brings up the question is it 60 pounds heaver than a 302 or 60 pounds lighter? Im just trying to get an ideal as for the swap that im thinking about weight might be the deciding factor.
Everything I've heard states that it's lighter than the 302 by about 60 pounds, and even more so than the 351. Either way, I wouldn't let the weight deter you. No matter how you look at it, the 300 isn't exactly a heavy engine, especially compared to some of the other I6s out there.
well im thinking about building a 300 to put in my 89 ranger 4x4 ext cab. Its got a wore out 2.9l right now which weighs about 400 lbs. before this i was thinking about a 4.6l modular but now im really liking the ideal of a straight six. One cause they are friggin cool, two i have one tore down in the shed at home, three the power range would be perfect (i tend to lug around more than screaming the motor). Now this is not going to be a stock ranger what so ever. Im going to cut and turn my TTB beams and run longer coils to gain about 3 inches of lift in the front then in the back im going to have deaver leave springs with flipped shackle hangers and longer shackles. My ultimate goal it to have a very capable 4x4 daily driver/weekend wheeler.

4 mo. of posts? then nothing? I wanted to C him put in the ZF and keep the Ranger rear.

I'd like to hear more about Deaver Co. and their products. They may offer a 5 pac for my rig? (IPD, National, I'm not sure who).
It sounds like you'll have to do some fire wall accessory mods or push out the fan/radiator for the transplant (mear inches, but needed).
well deaver makes really good leave springs basically. from what i gather they use lots of thinner leaves in order to gain softer ride and more travel.(dont quote me im no company rep). Im planning on using lift spring from them designed for a chevy half ton and then relocating my mounts forward and flipping my shackles and using a belltech 6400 shackle to increase wheel travel significantly on my ranger. im pretty sure they will custom make spring to, at least they will coils.
And yea it looks like i might have to do a little creative thinking but im thinking a 3 inch suspension lift and 2 inch body lift and that will alleveiat a lot of the problems.
Sorry I cannot find my link. I have recently done a D & C on my pc here at work kinda hap hazard in a hurry. The info I supplied was from memory from searches I've done. My objective is to have the lightest most reliable toughest engine/trans option for my kit with the most torque lowest rpm best fuel economy. I will keep looking and I will find the link it was a real good comparison of ford power plants. The reason I kept it was because of my initial and many others misconception that they 300/4.9 is heavy.
It all ways supprises me how a suspension lift can make room for what U seek but it DOES make some sense. The shackle flip can give 2 - 3 inches alone on some, why the 6400 as well?
Custom leafs - sounds expensive. Prices (4 some that will NOT work for me) are $350 +. The thinner leafs make sense but why fewer as well?
well deaver quoted me for 300 a pair for custom coils. but you might take a look at their web site and see what they offer for your application. I know they offer leaves for ford trucks to while they are a little expensive everyone i have talked to says they are well worth it. and the reason for the belltechs is they are longer than the stock ones so with a flipped shackle it will auctually gain me wheel travel which is my goal (to get as much usable wheel travel as possible on the cheap).
And yes i have seen lots of 5.0 builds over on the ranger station but i just wanna be different.
A straight 6 would certainly qualify as different...
I'm not sure how much length the ranger engine bay can handle, but I really suspect the 300 is a bit too tall. Oil pan to valve cover is pretty far....
A 200/250 might actually fit under the hood, since it was used in many rather smallish cars. Of course, the length may require a little attention.
