I have a 88 ranger with a 2.0L engine. I am wondering how hard
it would be to swap a FI 2.3 engine into it. If this is possible what years will fit and what if any modifictions do I need to make. It also has a 5 speed manuel transmission.
Thanks for the help
Externally, you cannot tell a 2.0 from a 2.3 from a 2.5. They all look the same. They will all bolt in the same, and use the same accessories. Swap away. The cylinder heads may differ (they went to 8 plugs later).
To add FI to a carb'd engine, you would need the fuel pump(s), the wiring harness, the ECM, the injectors and associated plumbing.
Unless you can park the two beasts next to one another, or live close to the junkyard and have a key of your own, doing the swap will lead to several trips back to get that thingy that you forgot. Like the inertia switch. Or the fuel pump relay. Or the Map sensor. Or the Air Charge Temp sensor. or the Coolant Temp Sensor. Just too many dang things to remember them all at the first try. Sure will run good when you are done, tho.
Where are the fuel pumps located. Someone told me they were in the fuel tank. If this is so how hard would they be to get at or would i have to swap fuel tanks also.
There are 2 pumps....a low pressure in the tank, and a high pressure on the drivers side frame rail just below your feet. These do not differ from 2.0 to 2.3 to 2.5, so leave them alone
