Real early this year also. We have had years where there would still be 2+ feet of snow on the ground.

Hard to get used to "seasonal temps" when they have been 10-20F above average.

I don't know all the technicallities but basically you need nights below freezing and days above. as the tree thaws during the day it pull sap up to start generation buds for leaves. the cold night stops this to prolong the season and keep the tree from buding too soon. once the tree buds the sap slows and changes in make up. goes sour fast and will give really dark suryp. I just talked to another guy I know and he said they made 56 gallons last night to bring thier total to around 400 so far and they are still making the light suryp where others around them are making darker.
