My 1996 7.3 with stock exhaust, no cat and a Magnaflow muffler had a beautiful sound with lot's of turbo whistle. I liked the whistle. I recently purchased a 1997 7.3. After removing the cat and adding a Magnaflow muffler, the sound is "ok" but I get no turbo whistle at all. None!!! Ford service say's she's making 16 PSI boost without being under a load so the turbo is working most good. Any idea's why I don't get any turbo whistle with my 1997 compared to the whistling Dixie 1996 I had previously??? TIA.
The only thing that I can think of is that maybe someone had swapped the exhaust housing on the 96 and instead of it having the stock a/r 1.15 it had a smaller one like a a/r 1.00 or 0.89. If this were the case then it would take less for the turbo to spool up on the 96 than on the 97, and thus you would in turn hear more whistle coming from the exhaust. Did you buy the 96 new or did someone ese own it before you? Oh and the 96 could have had an aftermarket down pipe which woul dhave added a lot to the whistling of the turbo, the stock one is a flat piece of srap metal and the aftermarket ones are 3" round pieces so there is much more air flow.
Install the 6637 mod get it from Riffraff contact Clay. Teh mod will make the difference. Pull the air inlet off of the one that is not making noise and check for dusting the turbo. Its edges should be sharp and should free spin. Dusting it easy to see in that everything will look dull. No play in or out or side to side.
Not to hi-jack the thread but does a turbo sound different once it's broke in?
It was finally above freezing with the sun shining yesterday and I had the windows down. My turbo seems to be louder than it was before. However, it's been months since I've had the windows down though...
Was the 96 a reg cab long bed or extended cab short bed and the 97 longer?
(extended cab long bed, crew cab short or long bed)
If so the difference in truck length and ultimately exhaust length could affect the exhaust sound the way you describe.
