Second EGR cooler!

My 2005 F350 6.0 is in the shop getting it's second EGR cooler replacement. The truck has 19K miles on the clock. Is there anything I can do to help this shy of deleting the EGR? That would void the warranty right. Anyway any tips would be helpful.

Yes you need to rebuild the oil cooler as well... The oil cooler plugs and overheats the EGR cooler...

After you rebuild the oil cooler you may want to install a coolant filter

X2 above. You need to put a coolant filter on this beast. Right now, you are using the oil cooler to do the filtering. You can buy the coolant filter from Dieselsite and install it yourself in 90 minutes or less.

Regards

Sorry, but my first question would be why you have two EGR coolers go with only 19K. Even if casting sand is to blame - 19K? There's got to be another underlying problem here. That's like an EGR/oil cooler every second oil change. He would have to be running coolant in the sand and not sand in the coolant. Sounds to me like the truck doesn't run long enough and sits. That's one thing that will kill these engines. What's the average length of the drives to you take the truck on?

It appears that they did not replace the oil cooler during the first EGR cooler replacement. This will continue to fry every replacement EGR cooler until the plugged oil cooler is replaced (this is what ehgeeray was stating).

I thought it was standard practice with Ford to replace the oil cooler as well if the EGR cooler goes?

My first question is WHY is Ford replacing the EGR cooler? Is the motor puking, is it leaking or loosing coolant? There has to be a reason other then Ford enjoys replacing EGR coolers.

We can give you better options if we know WHY.

If this is the second cooler, for whatever reason, you should insist the oil cooler be rebuilt or replaced.

Thanks for all of the replys. Yes this truck does spend some time sitting as you can tell by the mileage. It is my work truck and the economy is.............................well you know. Anyway the truck has never run bad or given any indication of such other than a check engine light appeared the other day. There is one thing I have noticed that i have been unable to convey to ANY service person. Under light continuous load ( 5-8 psi) there is a faint sort of grinding sound that sounds like a turbo ( I think) and it goes away if I accelerate harder or softer. That is to say if I come to a slight continuous grade, if I put it in tow/haul it doesn't make any noise but if I continue in regular mode it makes a noise. I never tow with this truck but it is a utility bed and the truck weighs 10K loaded.
