As said, there is nothing wrong with towing on OD, but it doesn't mean it has to be the best way.

Having 5 speed auto -I was playing with it being bored driving with low speed limit in CA.
On some occasions dropping a gear was bringing increase in mpg -also giving much better response when I needed it.

Curious though, was it a gas vehicle or diesel? What gearing did the rear diff have? What size tires? Lift? How heavy was the trailer?
All things factored in, what was the final gear ratio pushing the vehicle down the road? What was the sweet spot in the RPM for that vehicle?
