IDM mod w/pics

I know, I'm like two years late, but did the deed from my E99 110v to 140v thanks to Cory (Ziggy) . So while I didn't find the inner fender removal to hard, cleaning off the OEM sealant was a major PITA! I accessed the IDM from underneath, had it out in ~ 10 minutes.

Where it is, how to get it out.

Tools used to disassemble the IDM.

Location of the OEM resistor to replace, "6042" with a close up. Then the resistor removed, and 75k resistor being soldiered in two steps.

How I sealed everything back up. While I let the Black RTV dry, I inverted the IDM and applied pressure so internally if the RTV "settled", it would be against the TOP. Then I tried a new to me product that has some promise. Kind of like a one part epoxy coating. Went on well, and after 2-3 coats appeared to create a formidable seal. After 24 hours the coating was "rubbery", but on there. Took some pretty good scraping on the side to displace it. We'll see how it holds up.

And that's how I combat boredom when away from the family.

Ups the output voltage from the Injector Driver Module (IDM). IIRC pre-99/SD trucks were 100 volts DC, E99 SD's were 110v (mine), 99.5 to 2003 was 120v. So there is something to upping the voltage. So I modded mine from the 110v unit up to 140v. immediately noticed crisper response. Haven't really done testing to see if there is substantial improvement.

The IDM is charged with facilitating the injectors duty cycle. This is accomplished via a Hydraulically driven, Electronically (electromagnetic) activated Unit Injection (HEUI ) So by activating an electromagnet, the injector is able to deliver a shot of fuel into the engine. With the modded IDM, the voltage being used to operate the electromagnet is upped, imparting more "force" to the event, and ostensibly accomplishing the task "faster." Guess that's it.

I thought about you when I was looking for my Craftsman cotter pin puller the other day. I ended up using my Mac one with large hook. They sure come in handy.

Thanks, seems to start just a hair easier in the OMG hour of the morning. And using the BTS tunes (haven't tested the DP yet) the skinny pedal isn't touchy at all!

thanks for the links Scott (cookie88)

E-series = IDM 110. 94-97 F-series = IDM 100. 99-03 F-series = IDM 120

To convert IDM 120 to 140 you need a 73.2k ohm resistor. .5w 1%.

Digi-Key - PPC73.2KXCT-ND (Vishay/BC Components - 5033ED73K20F12AF5)

If you come up with an old IDM 100 or 110, they both take a 75k.

Thanks Mike, I have to say, soldiering the thing in really wasn't bad (I'll admit that I do have a fair amount of experience though). The toughest part for me was cleaning off the old gunk! Mind you, I'm working out of a motel, bored out of my mind, so my tools are limited (no air, no dremel, no vise, no mama bringin me sweet tea...) so it was a little daunting. Anyway all turned out GOOD!
