Yes you need to have an o-ring installed and you need to buy it separately from the filter element. Tranny fluid is not so "hard" on the rubber, so they assume you can re-use the old o-ring I guess. I install a new one when I change the filter.
Mine leaked also, tried removing/cleaning the o-ring while checking for nicks in the ring itself- none that I saw. Still leaked so I went to Ford and got another, for the low low price of @ $5 and ran it on with an impact- lightly- and it hasn't leaked since. And yes, I did replace the o-ring with the filter change the first time.
Just a few words to the wise here. This forum has some of the smartest and most helpful Ford Dealer Techs you will ever find. These guys work hard all day on these trucks and help us less knowledgeable all night. They do take exception to the "stealership" remarks and I do not blame them. JMHO and I do not work as a tech.

Regards,
Good catch rickatic- I missed that one or I prolly would've offered the same advice.

You shouldn't have to do that. The O ring seals not the threads.
If you buy from dieselfiltersonline.com ($13 each) the O ring comes with each filter.
I agree with Ijutic ss I purchase all my filters from dieselfiltersonline.com the filters are made by NTZ who make the filters for Motorcraft. Same filter comes with o ring for less than 1/2 the price 13.00 as the Ford Motorcraft OEM Filter which cost 22.04 without the o ring

I know that but tell the leaky o-ring that! Maybe it was a bad o-ring that came with the filter? Who knows, but tightening with a ratchet didn't stop the leak but my $30 impact gun on the lowest setting did the trick. * Disclaimer * if you choose to use an impact be careful. I'm not paying for your cracked housing!! LOL
