diff locks in 4wd???

HAD TO REPLACE AXLE IN MY 97 F250 A WHILE BACK WITH ONE THAT WAS FROM A SALVAGE YD. MY QUESTION IS THAT WHILE IN 4H I TURN THE TRK AND THE REAR WHEELS ACT AS IF THE DIFF IS LOCKED. IS THIS THE CASE? THE REAR END BEFORE DID NOT DO THIS AT ALL. THE ONLY ELEC CONN ON THE DIFF IS WHAT I ASSUME TO BE THE ABS SENSOR PLUG, MAYBE THE PLUG ALSO OPERATES A LOCKING MECHANISM FOR THE DIFF. THANX IN ADVANCE FOR ANY INFO.

I'm gonna ask a dumb ?
When you changed the rear axle you chk the gear ratio with the one you took out?

the only other thing could be the ls unit is going bad or the spider gears .
or worse yet the ring and pinion have teeth missing or pieces floating around in there.

The transfercase could also have a problem.

diff locks in 4wd???

The ratio should match b/c my ford dealership were the ones who did the work. I told them of the problem and they said since the rear end may have been sitting around for a while the clutch? in the diff may be sticking. They said to drive it in figure eights to work this out. Only thing is the rear wheels want to turn the same speed only while in 4wd. In 2wd it functions perfectly normal. The only thing that I have concern about is, after driving for about an hour the diff gets very warm, almost too hot to touch. The lube was replaced when it was installed. I have asked quite a few mechanically inclined friends about the rear end locking and no one can figure out how the diff knows to lock. The only plug on the diff is the abs plug. This is one for the pros

If the dealer says it is the clutches, and you said it drives fine in 2wd, You probably have what is called a limited slip differential not a locker. It uses friction clutches that sense wheel slippage and transfer power to the other wheel. This is either triggered by torque or wheel speed. A limited slip never actually locks the axleshafts together so they aren't lockers. They recommended driving in the figure 8 to help move the lube with the friction modifier into the clutches.
A locker has a clutch too, but you would notice it all the time. You would be able to hear it as it locks and unlocks.

Hope this helps.
