Expeditions -- Any problems?

Hubby and I want to buy an Expedition this year. And since we are good little shoppers, we've looked at Consumer Reports, and noted the (open circle) "Average" reliability of the Expedition.

I've never been too driven by that -- my first new car purchase was a Pontiac Sunbird (CR rating -- solid black circle!). Still have it with all original equipment at 120k miles (except alternator, battery and timing belt). But Hubby is worried.

Anyone have any chronic problems to report? Anything to watch out for? We'll be using our Expedition to haul scuba equipment and tow fishing boat. I don't even think we need the 4x4 for that!

Any and all advice is welcome!

Expeditions -- Any problems?

Yes there are a few problem areas that seem to effect some while being totally absent from most. The best you can do is take some time and read through the old post at this and other sites.

Just keep in mind that Ford has sold hundreds of thousands of the Expeditions and millions of the 'modular' 4.6L & 5.4L motors. It is very unlikily that the entire fleet of these would be 100% trouble free.

Also many of the reported problems stem from incompetant dealer service departments wrongly dianosing or incorrectly repairing problems the first time.

There are those who have experianced head gasket leaks, transmition problems and assorted electrical grimlins. I have not.

I have a '99 F150 5.4L 'work truck' with over 178,000 trouble free miles and my '99 Expy (bought used in Sept. '01 after exhaustive research) has likewise been trouble free.

I whole heartedly recommend the Expy for what you have in mind. I would also recommend that you give prefferance to the 5.4L V-8 as the additional 50 Lb. Ft. of torque are not only useful, but needed in a truck this size. Also give serious consideration to the 3.73 Limited Slip gearing. The Fuel MPG 'penalty' for these almost required options is minimal (1-2 MPG) and the benifits are very real.

Thanks, Petrol! I appreciate the comments. Hubby is more Engine-smart than I am, so I sent him your comments.
