460 balance problem?
460 balance problem?
hi, i just bought a 1980 F-150 its got a 460 stick shift with granny gear and when the rpms get around 2500 it shakes some. would the fly wheel be the wrong one? what year was internal balanced, and when did they go to external balnace? did they put a 460 in 150's in 80' it looks like someone welded in some motor mounts to the frame but it still has the rubbers from the block to the frame. dosent shake to bad in or outa gear untill around 2500 rpm. well thanks for lookin, charlie
I'd start by checking behind the cranks dampener. See if it has a hatchet weight on the spacer inbetween the balancer and motor. Then somehow you are going have to get a look at the flywheel. See of there is a cast in counter weight on it's back side (side facing the front of the motor).

You could not get a 460 w/a manual transmission until 1983.
1971/78 and some 1979's: The block casting number is: D1VE-6015-AB, -AB1, -AB2
This 460 engine does not use a weighted spacer (This also applies to 1968/70 blocks with C8VE, C9VE & DOVE casting numbers).
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some 1979's, 1980 and later: The block casting number is D9TE-6015-AB
This 460 has a weighted spacer. The flywheel and harmonic balancer are different than what was used with the D1VE and earlier blocks.
1979 460 engines: Ford switched engines mid-year 1979. Since this was running change, there is no before/from a certain production date or serial number break.
You have to know what the block's casting number is...to get the correct parts.
btw: 460 engines were not available in Passenger Cars after 1978.
Have a look down the side of the engine Block where starter motor bolts up, the block casting numbers should be there - if its D9TE then its a Externally balanced 460ci so it should have the crankshaft hatchet weight and a weighted flexplate or weighted flywheel to match, as if one is wrong that will cause your 460ci to vibrate......good luck.
