Go to Randys Ring $ Pinion web site and you will get an idea of different options you can go with regarding your rear end. I personally would not rebuild the LS rear end and would with an ARB locker or a detroit locker or one of the other after market brands.
My truck didn't come with a LS rear differential. I weighed the options and went with the Truetrac "clutchless" (helical cut gears) diff. It has been working great and is reasonably priced compared to the "clutch" type. It requires no maintenance, other than the routine gear oil changes, with no additives needed.
SRW has the Ford/Sterling 10.5" diff and the DRW has the Dana 80.
Not sure about the socket. I have one with a pilot tube in the middle of the socket that fits into the spindle of the rear axle.
