OK so I've been having this glow plug issue and reading here about changing out the controller.
I wanted to do a test, and used a jumper wire to keep the glow plugs on longer than the 2 seconds it comes on and cuts off..
When I get in the truck it starts but has a BAD KNOCKING SOUND from the front left cylinders, like something is hitting the valves or the heads??
it used to knock some there when it was cold, but would stop when it warmed up.
THIS IS BAD. Could the glow plug have warped the head? or made a valve stick?>?
I havent' driven but a mile and decided I was going to damage something and turned around and came home.
I'm going to take that front left glow plug out and look at it when the engine cools.
Could I have warped something> I kept the glow plugs on to the count of ten ( with the jumper wire )
I have a manual pushbutton on one of my other diesels and 10 seconds is not too long on that engine.
I'm thinking I could take it to the shop tomorrow.
There is one other thought. I did have the air filter off and was crawling all over the motor to get to the Glow Plug controller. Maybe something fell out of my pocket like a pennY> I am not saying I heard anything, just trying to think what in the hell could be down in the cylinder making that bad knocking sound.
I read on another forum that maybe a glow plug tip had broken off and was on the top of the motor>? I plan to pull the glow plugs and look at them when the engine cools down.

This is very likely, what kind of Glow Plugs are they?? [brand]
Motorcraft/beruglow plugs only! Those other brands Autolite, bosch etc are just plain junk. Becareful pulling them out as they may have swelled up if any burnt. And yes they will burn that fast lol.
UH-OH,, You may have heated them to long, when you get them out if they are not burned or broken,go get motorcraft beruos, if one is broken,,,prepare to pull heads,,sorry,I know you dont want to hear that....
That is your knock, dont run it any more, yes the head will have to come off,{might as well do both} Depends how much the piston is damaged. MOTORCRAFT BERUO !! GPs Autolites are junk.........
So the mechanic is about 3 miles up the road. I probably should not drive it there right>? I should have it towed? I've run it less than 5 minutes. Reckon it ruined the piston too>? heads?
