Knocking noise from the heads

OK so I've been having this glow plug issue and reading here about changing out the controller.

I wanted to do a test, and used a jumper wire to keep the glow plugs on longer than the 2 seconds it comes on and cuts off..

When I get in the truck it starts but has a BAD KNOCKING SOUND from the front left cylinders, like something is hitting the valves or the heads??

it used to knock some there when it was cold, but would stop when it warmed up.

THIS IS BAD. Could the glow plug have warped the head? or made a valve stick?>?

I havent' driven but a mile and decided I was going to damage something and turned around and came home.

I'm going to take that front left glow plug out and look at it when the engine cools.

Could I have warped something> I kept the glow plugs on to the count of ten ( with the jumper wire )

I have a manual pushbutton on one of my other diesels and 10 seconds is not too long on that engine.

I'm thinking I could take it to the shop tomorrow.

There is one other thought. I did have the air filter off and was crawling all over the motor to get to the Glow Plug controller. Maybe something fell out of my pocket like a pennY> I am not saying I heard anything, just trying to think what in the hell could be down in the cylinder making that bad knocking sound.

Could it be a sticking valve>?

I read on another forum that maybe a glow plug tip had broken off and was on the top of the motor>? I plan to pull the glow plugs and look at them when the engine cools down.

Motorcraft/beruglow plugs only! Those other brands Autolite, bosch etc are just plain junk. Becareful pulling them out as they may have swelled up if any burnt. And yes they will burn that fast lol.

broken at the tip

OK so I pulled the glow plug and sure enough it's broken off at the tip. probably an 1/8 of an inch/

So I'm guessing I'm gonna probably have to pull the heads? maybe replace the piston? what would make it break off like that? too hot? how can that be?

These are brand new autolite glow plugs. Should I replace them with Navistar or Motorcraft?

Will this happen to my others?

no way they could have heated to long, it was only ten seconds.

what was the other brand? beruglow? I pulled a few of the others and they were fine.

these are all less that a week old.

So the mechanic is about 3 miles up the road. I probably should not drive it there right>? I should have it towed? I've run it less than 5 minutes. Reckon it ruined the piston too>? heads?

I've got a glow plug tester and I'm going to test

any that I get in the future.

This sucks big time. I guess I'm going to have to ride my motorcycle to work until this gets fixed.

question, why would I want to do both sides? the truck uses no oil, only has 120k miles on it.

Shouldn't I be able to just fix this one side>?

I'm going to go ahead and order some motorcraft berus??

online I've found them for 12 bucks each.

Does NAPA carry them>? what about Navistar ( since this is an IH engine? )
