Front Driveshaft CV Joint

To summarize, when I was in 4x4, I heard a howling sound above 15 mph. I disconnected the front driveshaft and drove it in 4x4 and the noise was gone at any speed. I moved the Double Cardan part of the shaft as fast as I could, and I heard the same, faint whirring noise. The CV joint in the middle or whatever it is, (the ball in the rubber boot), seems to have dried up I guess. I covered it in axle grease and rotated it around and then reconnected it to the truck. Sound was gone for only a few minutes. I did some searching and saw that you can rebuild the CV joint. Anyone know what the process is like? Last question, if anyone has does this before, you've seen how stupidly close the nut heads are to the transfer case and I can't get a torque wrench in there to correctly tighten the nuts. So I just used a box end wrench with a pipe for leverage and applied the same pressure I used to break them loose, to tighten them back. Any suggestion on that? I can't even rely on an angle piece because it's too long.
