Duals on 79

Hi guys I am new to the site. I have a 1979 f350 lariat which I think has a 400. right now it has stock exhaust but I want it to sound louder/meaner. I kind of want duals but don't have much money. I was thinking a new cat then muffler with dual outlets. I'll take any suggestions as to good mufflers, cats, or if this is a bad idea and should do something else. I also don't want something so loud that its just obnoxious but still gets noticed. Thanks

Also i have another question, what would be the best pipe sizes. I've read around here that a 3" inlet (if thats what i have, truck is in storage and wont be out until summer) to dual 2.25 or 2.5 outlets is good.

The muffler I would recommend is WickedFlow Max 18SD30224 or 18SD30250. Those mufflers are awesome. They are not overly loud, probably just what you are looking for.

I used to have dual glass packs on mine with a 2.5 but I guess I got tired of all the racket so I bought 2 Summit racing turbo's (under $20 each). The idle is about the same but wide open is much less annoying. I have found bigger pipe diameter seems to make for deeper tone. Not a big fan of that Flowmaster pingy/tinny noise at idle either.

Yea I think I want to stay away from the Flowmaster. I thought maybe Magnaflow would be a better choice or maybe glasspacks just because I don't drive this truck more than couple times a week during the summer so I think I could live with it. So if I did that would it be ok to go cat to y-pipe or something then to dual glasspacks?

Does a 79 F-350 have a cat? Just wondering, you may not have one.

I really have no idea and the truck is on a farm in a barn right now. Maybe someone who knows what they're talking about can come in here and help me because I don't

A '79 does not legally require a cat even if it did come with one, but only if it can pass an emissions test without it. 1983 and newer vehicles that came with cats do have to retain them.

One way you could tell if it originally had one is if the fuel gauge says "Unleaded Fuel Only"

So would a muffler with dual outlets soud terrible or is that a viable way to go? and if i wanted dual glasspacks, how would i go about doing that if i have a single pipe now without doing headers and the whole deal?

Actually a muffler with 2 outlets is how most catback systems are made. I'm not sure what you mean about dual glasspacks. Do you mean dual pipes from the manifold back or what? I knew a guy who had a stock Dodge with a 360 and all he did was replace the stock muffler with a glass pack. It sounded decent and you could hear him coming from a distance. I don't know why but to me Dodge trucks have the best V8 exhaust sound, and Mustangs have the best factory V8 sound. Just my opinion

Well you said earlier you had dual glasspacks but I'm guessing that was with headers. I think I'm going to go with a muffler that has dual outlets and run a pipe out each side with a tip. It sounds like after the muffler, 2.5 inch pipe would be the best.
