Hey so I was poking around in the FE forum (might inherit one with a roller for a 4x4 body swap) and they were talking about getting a few more HP and some low end torque be running pre-1972 gear on their timing set. Is this an issue for us as well? I'm running my motor with a stock replacement 1977 gear set, and am wondering if I should have looked for one out of an earlier motor.
timeing is timeing no matter what gears you go with. unless you use a degree wheel to set it, it will always end up the same when you put the dots together, or "straight up"
Yes timing is timing, but what he is referring to is that on some seventies Ford V8's they retarded the timing set about four degrees for emissions reasos. If you have one of these engines, changing to a straight up timing set has some power and efficiency advantages.
I don't remember this ever applying to any FE engines. I thought that the only engines that this was ever done to was the 351M/400. Even if it did apply and it has been converted to a roller cam set up, then I would be willing to bet that they upgraded the timing set at that time.
The best way to know that you have a straight up timing set on your six is to buy from the aftermarket like Comp Cams. They sell some good replacement quality products that are straight up and are reasonably priced. It wouldn't be a very big job to just slap in a timing gear set.
Don't know about the FE, but our 300's do have that 4* retardation in stock replacement timing gear sets. Cloyes makes an all metal set (which if I recall correctly is what Comp markets) that has 3 keyways (4* retart, straight up, 4* advance). Last time I lookup prices (about 2 years ago) they ran about $75 a set.
Nice. I'm gonna have to look in on that. I remember a post on an 11 second 6 banger on the other forum that mandated a gear swap, didn't know why until now. Might have to put this in the future upgrades. I hear it helps with the low end torque.
