Wear safety glasses when under the truck since there's an awful lot of dirt and stuff that falls on top of you. And get a buddy to help. Long extensions and a swivel joint, several applications of PB blaster before you start, and coat everything in anti-sieze before you put it back together.
how much fun are these to change without pulling the tranny? any tips or pointers?
I just pulled my turbo out and I'm changing mine out. With the turbo out of the way its still a hard job. I don't want to sound discouraging but I don't see how a person could do it with the trans and turbo in. What is making mine a little harder is I bought the brass donuts from Beans and they have to be heated up to get them to fit the pipes. I even disconnected the up pipes from the exhaust manifolds to make more wiggle room. Its a bitc!!, good luck.
I'm right in the middle of it now, I have to get those brass donuts on the up pipes. Then I'll put the collector back on and go from there. The up pipe removal from the manifolds was easy compared to the collector bolts at the top, they were a bitc! to brake loose. At this point I'm not sure if I should just put the collector on loose, put the pipes on the manifold loose and then put the turbo back on so I have some play in the pipes. If everybody around here would leave me alone so I can get it done I'll give you an update later tonight.
That's for sure. I had a lot of time today but ended up doing those honeydews. When I started out, I heated the brass donuts up a little (this is what Beans said to do) and pushed them on the up pipes and they split. $85 down the drain! I'm not a happy camper because when I called Beans to order the D66, new pedestal and brass donuts they answered the phone on the first ring. I called all day and left messages and no response. I'm pissed, where did you get your normal up pipe gaskets?? I say the hell with the brass ones, the stock ones lasted 168K and were not really leaking but thought sense I have the turbo off I'll replace them. You having any luck?
