spare tire holder

Hello everyone, I have a F350 that has a lift and 35s. Because of the tire size the spare takes up room in my bed which i hate! When I got it , it did not have any of the tools used to lower the spare tire. I "borrowed" the tools out of my work truck (ford ranger) and tried lowering the winch but I had no luck. I took off the horn and got a picture of what is on the spare winch. I it looks like brass bolt or something with lines in it like those lock lugs have for nice wheels and tires to prevent theft. Does anyone know what that is and how i can use it? I really need to figure this out.

Thanks

The picture doesn't look too good, but I would assume that you are referring to the anti-theft style device on the spare tire winch. Usually, there is a key in a small bag in the glove-box that attaches to the end of the jack handle to lower the spare tire. If you don't have one, it will be a pain to lower the tire. Even if you do have one (or borrow one), you have to be careful not to strip the squiggly lines out.

With the tube removed you can remove the "lock". I don't remember how it comes out but it will come out. Some Ford dealers have a master set of keys that fit the spare tire locks. They can also order you a new key also. I just remove the key on mine.

Each one is different and comes with it's own SPARE TIRE LOCK KEY CODE CARD.
Here are some pics:

I bought a 06 F350 a month ago. It didn't come with the key to lower the spare. All you have to do is remove the plastic tube that guides the rod into the mechanism that lowers the tire. Once you remove it all you have to do is take a screwdriver and pop the anti theft device out. It's just held in with a spring. Next reinstall the plastic tube. Any 3/8" socket extension will raise or lower the tire. Took me all of 5 minutes to do this on mine.

I used a 9/16 bolt extractor socket (the type with teeth that grip a rounded-off bolt head), but I hear that a 9/16 12-point socket can be hammered on to the anti-theft adapter as well. I used an extension bar to turn the socket and unwind the winch. I dropped the winch assembly out after the spare tire was down.

Search for the thread "Drop That Spare" on this forum.

I think that Ford has around 20 or so key combinations for the spare tire winch. If you can find a nice dealership and sweet-talk them, they may help you drop the winch. I don't think it's too expensive to buy a new key ($30 or so IIRC), but you can pop the lock off and then the end of the winch handle will fit into the winch slot left so you never have to worry about losing the key again.

The down side is that anybody can drop your tire and run away with it. I just bought some BF Goodrich Mudders (and one for the spare) and got this to protect my investment:

ST30 Spare Tire Cable Lock

Just to give you a heads up, the real thieves cut through cables like butter. Middle of the day on a busy main street with lots of traffic, I saw my brother in laws car infront of a restaurant. Parked across the street, and over 2 storefronts. I came out from talking to my in law 5 minutes later to see a car nosed up to the back of my truck, 1 guy in the drivers seat with the car running, and 1 guy laying on their back under my truck, trying to unravel the cable lock I wrapped twice through the frame/ tire. Heavy traffic blocking my way. I hit the panic on the remote, they see me coming and split . I try to get a plate number, but the car has no plates. I get to the truck, cable cut like butter, and half unwrapped. 2 more minutes and the tire would have been gone. Now using heavy chain with square links, and a heavy lock. 5 years later, tire is still there.

Had about the same problem. A quick check on the FTE search and problem solved. Screwdrivered the "key" out and now the jack handle does the job.
