A cheap carb that will work without a rebuild? They don't exist. The new fuels they use with all the alcohols ruins them in short order if they sit around for a few months.
2. with a carb from a junk yard 461 fit on top of my 351W.
If it has the same bolt pattern, it will fit. But the same rule for the first question still applies. A junkyard carb is probably going to need a rebuild.
3. will a carb that's too big cause a bad vibration at idle and under load?
Usually not. More than likely you will dig up old carb after old carb, all have been sitting around, and all I have old gummy fuel inside them. Getting any of them to work correctly will be a gamble.
I agree with Dave. Every time I ever tried to do CHEAP it as a rule cost more money than if I would of bought rebuilt or new.
What is the OEM carb your trying to replace?
Craig
i have a holly 4 barrel that is not for my truck on it right now (came with truck) and i wanna be able to 1 see if an OEM carb will fix the issue, and 2 what it will cost..
I am assuming you have a 460? If so, the original carb is a 4bbl made by holley, but it has lots of vacuum ports that you will probably have to plug to make it even work. I am also assuming you have a aftermarket carb that does not have very many lines on it correct?
actually its a 351. and i got 1 or 2 vac lines and they are both plugged...also when i floor it i get this weird *** noise that i cant explain at all..sounds like a loose rod banging around but only when at 3/4-WOT at cruise i dont hear it and when towing a car i dont hear it unless im in that throttle band
I have doubts that a carburetor could cause a knocking sound. Pre-ignition or detonation sounds, yes- due to too lean a mixture or timing too far advanced. I'd first try retarding the timing. Your truck with 351 and a four-barrel carb used a Holley (Motorcraft) 4180C. If that's what you have then get a good kit and a new correct power valve and rebuild it. I suggest a Holley or Walker kit and power valve. Use plenty of spray carb cleaner and lots of compressed air to clean all the passages. The above named kits have very good instructions.
Have a look at the choke horn, you should find the List number along with a Ford engineering number if it's a factory carb, like so
Onve you have the list number, take a look here: http://www.holley.com/data/TechServi...%20Listing.pdf
If it's not there, call them, they should be able to tell you the application, and all of the stock specs for the carb.
This page will be able to help you with the Ford engineering number and give you the application if nothing else: Ford V8 Truck Carburetor Parts - The Carburetor Doctor
If it is a factory 80's Ford/Holley carb, it's a 600 CFM 4180C, no matter if it came off of a Mustang 5.0, a 351W or a 460.
i just got 2 lines on my carb..but its not the carb for my truck cause 1 the throttle cable dont hook up right and 2 the kick down road dont hook up at all
Get a Holley 4180C for an automatic trans vehicle from a junkyard and rebuild it. You can often find kits on ebay for much less than at auto parts stores. Junkyard price should be about the core value.
Why don't you contact Holley's online Technical Service, give them the info on your carburetor and truck, and ask them for advice about what to do to make it right for your vehicle? You'll probably at least need adapters for the kickdown rod and the throttle cable. You may also need a proper power valve to match your engine.
