Vin Numbers
I have a 79 Ford F250 4x4. Will the vin numbers help me identify the original motor and transmission? (This truck has no motor or transmission). How do I figure this information out?

Yes, you can run the vin number and the transmission and axle codes through the vin decoder on this site. To access, click on the tech articles link on the right side of the page. Scroll down to the 1998 articles and click on the 73-79 vin decoder...enter the digits and get your results.

The 4th digit of the VIN# with tell you which engine WAS originally installed (If the Data plate is original to the door)
I suspect the letter will be S or H.
Usually a C6 (auto) was Hooked up behind these engines.
I have a MUCH BETTER Rating plate de-coder for 78-79's on MY site than those on other site's.
Your VIN should be F26S?DE-GL???? or F26H?DE-GL????
The Transmission letter will be G.(auto)
