Any '89 to early-'94 e4OD from an IDI diesel 4x4 will fit your '91. Axles, driveshaft, and transfer case from any gasser or diesel '80-97 F250/F350 will fit, depending on whether you want the TTB front or the F350 straight axle.
Someone here will chime in with the pinion gear differences on the F350 straight axle front end. I think 2WD F250's have coil springs on the front, while the 4x4 F250's have leaf springs on the TTB front.
Unless your truck is really nice & you're super-attached to it, probably easier to sell it & buy a 4x4 IDI truck. That's what I did. My '91 XLT 2WD was a good friend to me, but I sold her and eventually found my '94 4x4 turbo.
Marshall91F250 welcome to FTE and the idi forum
from what i understand an e4od up to 97 will bolt right in
Uh, rupejosh... you sure?
The PSD uses a different bellhousing. Yes, the E4OD's all have the same internals (gasser/diesel alike) with minor improvements made for '94-97 that any rebuild shop can do for '89-93 models.
The early '94.5 & '95 PSD's have the same bellhousing that we do?????? B-b-b-b-but... you sure?
I always thought we IDIs couldn't share ANY bellhousing with the PSD, and always thought it was stupid of mothership Ford not to make 'em compatible with us. God knows enough of us would love 5R100 or ZF-6 swaps.
Hey SuperKram, I should have put this in my post. I have a 1991 7.3 E4od 4x4 already in it and I was thinking of getting a used one from salvage that has the upgrades already with low miles or would it be better to just rebuild? I don't do much hauling, I just use it for daily driver. Thanks for all the replys.

Oh! That little bit of info could have saved us a little time here. It helps to write a sig line with your truck details (via user CP on top of your page if you're signed in) mine's a good example.
If you can score a 4x4 diesel e4od from a private person who just wrecked their '89-94 IDI truck via CL, then go for it. Otherwise I'd say find a trans shop that knows their trucks, especially someone who's willing to discuss mods and aftermarket parts, such as firmer valve springs and stronger torque converters. All the aftermarket mods & parts advertised for the '94-01 Powerstrokes will work inside our IDI e4od transmissions. Yes a shop will cost more but then you usually have the benefit of a warranty & a face to talk to if you have issues or questions. No offense to anyone who runs a junkyard here, but I'm not real willing to trust their word or knowledge of something's internal condition.

Marshall.a rebuilt E40D can set you back literally the trucks worth.(around 4 grand.)
based on a poll i did a while back,it became clear that the C6's big brother was just as bulletbroof, with mile ratings upwards of 300k.
when mine blow's,im just going to toss a 7 or 800 bone yard trans in her and hopefully go another 100k.
i dont keep trucks more than 7 or 8 years tho.to me,it's cheaper with less down time,to hit ebay and fix another up a bit with low miles and newer with less rust.(yup.next ones going to be a powerstroke baby. totally loving the IDI tho.)
