2004 F-250 Steam Locomotive!?

Driving to work this morning and my truck seems to have turned itself into a locomotive!

2004 F-250 6.0 PSD. 125K on the odometer and has been using coolant at the rate of 1 gal/ every 10 days or so. Knew there was a problem but I just didn't have the time to fix it with the move and all. Exhaust is white and smells like coolant. No real loss in power that I can notice.

AJ at River City Diesel just hooked me up with a package deal and shipping to Hawaii (just moved here a month ago) on a complete EGR delete kit, oil cooler refresh kit and 4" SS Magnaflow exhaust system!

Am I missing anything or any other reccommendations out there on what else should/ needs to be done? Head studs and gaskets would be nice but not sure I have the time/ finances with 4 little ones and working a new job out here to tackle that project right now... Seems they're holding together as the oil is clean and the coolant seems clean as well, that is to say, I can't discern any mixing of fluids at this point.

Thanks,
Fungus

An EGR cooler leak is likely. It can hydrolock your engine and do all kinds of damage.

That's what they said at River City... I'm going to park her and drive the 'ol '69 Bronco until the parts get here and I get her patched up...

Any advice on a cooler filter?

You could just get you one of those neat train whistles and have some fun. Just kidding, good luck in getting it fixed up.

Use this for the coolant filter. It is probably the most popular one out there. I just installed mine this last weekend. Very easy to do. Took me about 30-45 mins.

I 2nd it what utjer recommend Dieselsite coolant filter. You also might want to consider the optional ball valves to install along with the filter assembly. Makes replacing the filter a cleaner job without coolant loss. And like utjer said easy install.

If I'm deleting the EGR cooler, is it really necessary to run a coolant filter? Overall it seems pretty cheap insurance but just wondering if it really buys you much after a Delete kit install...

Thanks guys!

The coolant filters will save all cooling system components. Another big one it protects is the water pump. I second the ball valves. I put them on mine. They will help when it comes time to change the filter so you can stop the flow of coolant or if for some reason you need to turn it off you can.

The oil cooler passageways (coolant side) are usually what plug first. This is the main reason for the filter.

Nuff said! I'll suscribe to that and get one on the way...

Thanks again all! I'm sure I'm bound to have more questions as this repair takes form...

Fungus,

Are you rebuilding the oil cooler at the same time as the EGR delete? The oil cooler starts to plug up and that takes out the EGR cooler. I have been down the "not replacing the oil cooler after an EGR cooler failure road". It ended in disaster. You do not want to deal with a ruptured oil cooler. Good luck

If the oil cooler plugs, then you'll notice a drop in power. I've been down that road before. 200 miles from home, pulling the travel trailer, over heating, engine fan running continueously, no power and 6 mpg. It's a situation that sucks and it will hit you at the worst time. If your into the motor anyway, might as well do the oil cooler as well.

Yep! Got the oil cooler refresh kit from River City as well as the 4" SS Magnaflow exhaust. Figured the muffler would be plugged up too... Ordered the coolant filter from Dieselsite w/ the ball valves and extra filters as I don't want to have to buy them out here... HI is expensive!

Alright fellas, truck has been static since my last post! I've been driving the '69 Bronco since it's resurrection in Dec of last year. I've got all my 6.0 parts stacked up and finally looking at the time to Get'r'done this weekend! All tech tips printed and in a 3 ring binder, tools poised to pounce!

Thanks for all the help, advice & a great forum!

Wish me luck,
Fungus
