Unplug the temperature sensor under the hood of the truck, and ground that wire out with the ignition switch in the run position.
If the gauge is good, the gauge will swing over to hot.
Don't leave the gauge wire grounded for excessive periods as it can damage the gauge.

Just keep in mind that this test will only tell you that the gauge works. It won't tell you why it doesn't work. Don't automatically replace the gauge if it doesn't swing to hot. There's a lot of wires and connections to check it if doesn't swing.
