99 3.0 4x4. Rebuilt the tranny about 2 years ago. REbuilt treated valve body at the same time. Fluid level good. Fluid fresh.
No tranny/engine codes flashing.
STarted slipping into neutral this week. JUst like if I took the shifter and did it by hand. Usually would reingagd. Today it stopped reingaging, but if I turn off the over drive id works like normal. Then I lost reverse. Once I am up to speed, I can engage OD and it seems to usually work ok. Its almost like when the OD is on, it does not downshift or something. So no od. No rev. Any ideas? TRYing to find a code reader right now.
edit, could not find anyone to read if there are any trouble codes. Am thinking about pulling the valve body tomorrow and cleaning it out. Think I can reuse the gasket or get it apart without destroying the gasket? I could not find one today.
edit II, Ok, I dont know if this gives any more information, but from a start I can turn off the OD and it drives normally. Shifts are firm and normal. Once to around 45, I can let off the gas, hit the OD button, let the OD engage and then put the gas back to it. From there it drives normal until I need to stop and start again. I then hit the OD off and repeat the cycle. For some reason if the OD is turned on, it slips into "neutral" at slower speeds. Strange huh? If not for the no reverse (I do get a little reverse) it would be drivable.
Sounds to me like you have a problem with the bands and reverse clutches, the forward clutched are probably toast too. This is often the result of solenoid bore wear on the major solenoids that engage those bands. These wear into the case, so swapping our or rebuilding the valve body does not fix the problem, though it can help it run better for a little while. There are bushing kits to address the problem. If you are lucky the bands and clutches could still be good and the problem can be fixed.
well got in there and made things worse. Or maybe just more of the same. the wiring harness disintegrated in my fingers. Not the wiring, but the insulation. So have to replace that. I suppose this could have been my problem, or its just something else that needs to be addressed. I gave up and rented a car for the week. Went out to our local airport (MCO orlando) and got the rental car companies bidding against each other. By the time I was done i got a yaris for 1 week for $100 (plus tax).
The wiring harness for the tranny was $100 from ford. Called mazda and they wanted $120 and the aftermarket tranny supplier in town wanted $150. Will pick it up tomorrow.
