I have a 68 f250 with a 360 engine. it backfires out the passenger side often. I have hooker headers into cherry bombs without tailpipes. What could be the problem? Its too annoying to drive
Just to clarify: are you talking about engine shaking 'bangs' or popping through the exhaust?
Mine (see my sig) pops through the exhaust when cold or in-between, particularily on deceleration. If your truck doesn't have the cold air riser off the exhaust, it will contribute -- ie: a chrome open element air filter and headers.
If it's popping, in my case it's caused by a cold hearted 428 with headers, no heat riser, and fairly open exhaust.
If not, start with the basics: points, plugs, condenser, rotor, cap, timing. After that it's fuel - so fuel filter and carb. After that, I always drive the truck to my favourite mechanic and open my cheque book..
I do have the Pertronix igniter under the cap. had new plugs in with less than 500 miles on them. havent touched the carb or filter since I bought it last year. cap and rotor hasnt been touched either. new plug wires are on. truck is currently hibernating for the winter.I am just trying to get my priorities lined up for spring as to what I will check first. Thanks for the responses.
My brother in law lives in Brisbane. I also went to Australia for my honeymoon last year. Loved it and didn't want to leave. Anyway I think the trouble might be in the heads too. Running on unleaded fuel for too many years and I doubt the previous owner put in hardened valve seats. Thanks
