Late 85 or 86 has the thicker block over the block heater, I would rebuild it.
The early 85 blocks and older ones, maybe not if you would be using the block heater on a regular basis.
On a side note, I just found out my 97 Stroke has the block heater in the oil cooler.
The oil cooler is very close to the one on the IDI engine.
So now I just need a dry place to crawl under it and see if that heater would go in the plugged port on the IDI cooler.
If it would, using one of them should eliminate the block cracking issue.
