i have an 06 ranger with a 3.0. a year ago i had new valve seats put in the heads due to loss of compression cause it was idleing rough. it happened after 60k miles now 10k miles after i did the heads it starting to happen again, has anyone had this problem. i want to find out if its the heads in these years, i know they changed the heads from 04 to 07, or if their is something that starts to go out around 50k miles causing it to run to lean(seeing how these engines run lean as it is) and within the 10k miles the seats burn up, that causing them to go out again after only 10k miles after rebuild, if that makes sense. i had 2 buddys with rangers have this problem and have it come back after 10k miles. the one friend had ford put new heads on that were supposed to be updated but it still did it again. just want to find out if i should get heads for an 03 or if its something causing it to run lean.
The seats are a hardened insert. I have run into bad seats, allow me to explain the common causes.
Yes, lean conditions do cause the valves to warp or the seats to wear out more quickly than normal. It is common for these vehicle to get vacuum leaks, so any lean codes should be attended to and addressed before a more serious problem occurs.
My dad's vehicle has worn down valve seats that were the result of dirt passing through his K&N filter. It acts like a sand blaster, but also if a grain of fine sand gets caught on the seat surface, it gets crushed between the valve and seat. On inspection we found ultra fine sand particles embedded in the seat surface. K&N can claim all they want about their filter, but the simple fact is that the filter does not filter well and can damage the engine. Needless to say my dad no longer uses a K&N. I stopped using them a long time ago after I saw the results of the Spicer test.
