If you have a transmission built in the 60's that chart is very useful. If you have a newer trans ignore that chart. It's WAY out of date.

Normal temps are 60-100°F above ambient when unloaded. Loaded is hard to predict, but your maximum steady state temperature is 220°F. You can go to 250°F for no more than 1/2 hour with no damage.

any idea what the tranny line pressure should be. I have an Edge Evolution programmer with "real time" diagnostics including rpm, engine oil temp, tran. fluid temp, trans. line pressure, exh. back pressure. etc. My truck has been cruisin around with tran. line pressure 55-70 uphill and in teh 30's on the freeway. Didn't think it ever ran that high before. Any Idea?

unsure what line pressure should be, but I believe most chips and tuners bump up line pressure for firmer shifts

That sounds about right to me.

Where does this 60-100*F above ambient come from?
This is saying that its ok for the fluid to be 60*F if ambient
is 0*F? Is it true a code set for overheat in a E4 and 4R is
270*F?( at the pack)

I have used 180 to 230*F for years (min/max)
at the pressure port. Most thermo valves are set to flow
at 180*F.

Unless you're running the original front seal

Mine went at 240°F. The front seal has been replaced and I've got 185K on the original E4OD.

From observing many trucks.

OK or not, that's what is going to happen.

Yes, that's true.

Neither the E4OD nor the 4R100 have a thermo valve from the factory. There is a pressure bypass, but it does not have a thermo element in it.

Correct. Late E4 ( around 97) with 3/8 cooling lines came with the valve. 5/16 did not.
My comment was about aftermarket coolers with bypass stat.
Fluid temp helps control water in the system.
I have seen rusting and pitting of parts from running it to cold.

I'm wondering if I should put a T-stat on. The original owner of my truck put a MASSIVE cooler on. In the summer it is great and save for backing a 15K lb trailer it stays under 180.

But in the winter time I don't often tow and it stays cool. I do occasionally cook it up to 180.

I've got a thermal bypass that came with the big trucool cooler I got. It's used just for warming up the tranny in the winter. From what I've read from these guys a tranny too cold is about as bad as too hot.

Whether you guys care or not my 97 just had the 5/16 lines on it.

It was model dependant.
My 97 E-350 is E4 with valve and 3/8 lines (oem)

Mark,
Have you found any temp distinction between a sender in the pressure port vs a probe mounted in the pan?
