How do I tell if my hubs are bad. Got some snow here and I used 4WD and it kept making funny noises on take off. Sounded like something was slipping/grinding and then 4WD would lock in and it would be ok. It only does it when I come to a stop and then take off. 86 f-150.
You can put the transfer case in 4wd, and then jack up one front tire at a time and play with the hubs. When they lock in, you can usually feel a little more drag and or you can watch the front axle u-joint and see it start turning when the hub is locked. You can let it down and do the other front tire/hub.
Might be time to clean/repack the hubs. If the sliders are moving freely, they may not fully engage. Then again the sliders may be worn, and in need of replacement.
So, I was driving the other night and stopped at a stop sign. Went to move and nothing happened almost like the truck was in neutral. The only way I got it to move was in 4-lo. I don't think power was making it to the rear wheels and only the front wheels were driving. Got it to where I was going and tried again......nothing. WOuld only move in 4-lo. Then that started making noise. Something wrong with my transfer case?
