Pulling Engine
Pulling Engine
Getting ready to pull my 6.0 out I just need to know, How much does the complete engine weigh. I am told that my old gasoline engine lift is too small. Also any things to watch out for while I am doing this job (surprises)<?xml:namespace prefix = v ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" /><v:shapetype id=_x0000_t75 stroked="f" filled="f" path="m@4@5l@4@11@9@11@9@5xe" o

Happy...
I just did this and finished on Sunday. We pulled the engine and transmission together out the front. We removed the entire front grill section, the front core support, all the coolers, moved the a/c condenser to the side, and pulled the fan and shroud. We then disconnected all the fuel lines and the engine wiring harness. We removed the turbo and disconnected the exhaust. I have a MBRP exhaust system so we removed the down pipe for more clearance. We then hooked the engine up to a 2 ton overhead chain fall and picked it up. We installed a 3/8 grab hook into the passenger side head with a grade 8 bolt to allow us three places to hook up the chains. The other two lift points were the drivers side factory lift ring and through the turbo pedestal. This hookup allows the removal of the engine without damaging the rim area of the upper firewall. If you try to use to rear lift ring it will tear up that rim. I know because we tried it. As we raised the engine up we rolled the truck backwards. My oil pan was too close for comfort so we removed it and the oil pick up. After all this, the engine slid right out the front. We connected a HD nylon tow strap from the chain fall hook to the rear of the transmission for balance help and set the entire assembly on a old tire on the the floor. I have a 1 ton engine hoist that we sort of used to move the assembly to the heated part of the garage. It was really not enough. The engine/trans/ transfer case assembly is HEAVY.
Good Luck

Thank you for all your input, I didn,t think my lift would suport it. I am not sure of it's capacity but it is old so I will buy a 2000# one and sell the one I got. I really don't wana say why I am pulling it because I did somthing stupid and I now need to check the main barings. I am hopping to change out the head bolts when I do get it pulled also.. This might be all for nothing as I might be getting forced to retire which will mean no money ( also no truck).. we wiill see though...But once again thank you all
Happy...
I would go bigger with the hoist. My 1 ton would barely pick it up and I had to ride the back of it while we moved it. I would not try to raise the motor out of the truck with it. How are you removing the engine, out the front?
