I have a 2000 f150 xlt 5.4l 4x4. it has the 4r70w. is it supposed to have a 4r100? its been acting up when shifting from 2nd into 3rd. it revs higher than normal and then bumps into 3rd, i dropped the pan and changed filter and tranny fluid which seemed to fix the problem but after coming back from a snowmobile trip it has been acting up again. any thoughts on if its bad or should be changed again. if it has to be replaced can i just do a swap from a 70w to a r100 or is there computer programming stuff or anything for that matter i have to change. thanks
Your truck has the 4r70w from the factory.
And it's a major big deal + very expensive to swap in the 4r100!
There's a lot of things you would need to change.
Just off the top of my head you would need, the 4r100,longer torsion bars, exhaust adjustment, dip stick and dipstick tube, shifter cable,4r100 trany wire harness, dash wire harness,4r100 computer, driveshaft adjustments(front and back). I think you would need new mounting brackets for the T case.
So you see,
it would be cheaper to just go with a built 4r70w.

I have talked to several friends that work on trannys and build them, and was told that there is no use to build the 4r70. Also as far as a dash wire harness and 4r100 computer I don't think you need them. A computer chip should cost less and will help out in alot other areas also. The thing is everything you would need to do the swap you can get off a wreaked truck. So this will cut the cost of parts in hafe. I would just go with a better stronger tranny in the 4r100 if I was going to stay with an slushbox (automatic).

lmao. i have never done the swap, but from everything i have heard/ read (been researching 5.4 and possible tranny swap) but that most likely will never happen.lol any way, from what i have read, at a minimum you need a new computer because they are transmision specific, and you can only reprogram them for a different engine. and yea new wiring harness and all that good stuff.lol. personally i dont see a problem with using the 4r70w. it is a great tranny and we have beat the snot out of a few different ones without any issues.

You are exactly right on the computer thing. It's a must have item.
When we started we thought we could program for the 4r100,,,but no go. Had to buy the 4r100 computer...lol
i never said they have done the swap. As far as computer that was me thinking that you could use a chip to take care of it. I'm happy for you on the the swap you have a better tranny than the 4r70. I need to do the swap or take an even better step and go with a manual. I know from experance that for my truck the 4r70 can't handle the power my truck makes.

haha how much power you running? and you really wanna go with a 5 speed? i may be wrong, but i have heard that the 5 speeds for these trucks werent the greatest. (i still want one though)

Nope sure exectly I have a 99 lightning motor ported and polished heads a custom cam, supercharger 10lb pully, custom exhoust. I know if I'm under 45 or 50 and I hit it the truck will speen 37s, and the tranny will start slippen bad. Yea I never been a fan of automatics. Everything thing else I have is a manual. I'm not sure on the quility of the 5 speeds in theses trucks. Personaly I would reather have a 6 speed for highway. The six speed is what I'm putting in my Saleen Mustang. To be percise the 6 speed is the T-56 magnum.

very nice. . . maybe one day.... =) lol i can dream about that kind of stuff right? lol i like the sound of that kind of power but i would have to keep my 4x4.
i was thinking you were planning on using one of the stock ford 5 speeds... i seem to have heard that they are about the sam as the 4r70w for towing... i cant remember for sure though.

Hey mine is a 4x4 also. I tow a 23ft seafox to the lake or too the ocean. I hate towing with mine but I can't tow the camp that duty is left to the super duty diesel lol. Like I said I'm not sure of the quility of the stock for 5 speed, but it can't be any worse than the 4r70. Hey atlest with the 5 speed you get better mpg and better power, and I don't think anyone can argue with that. The one thing I like automatics for is the drag strip for more consistent times. If I keep my truck after I return from my second tour over seas I will do a solid axle swap, then I will look about putting a better tranny in it maybe a t56 or even the t56 magnum.

I dont think the opening poster is running anywhere near the power you are so a 4r70w should be fine.
Now in your case it's total junk...lol You NEED a 4r100! Your truck sounds bad azz!
That is the reason I had to eventually go with the 4r100.
I tore 3, built for racing, 4r70s out of my truck in 3 years and it was getting very expensive! So I went with the 4r100
I'm making 594 rwhp/ 620 torque and hitting in with 100 shot of nitrous on top of that at the track. It was eating up the 4r70s

There's a guy over on f-150-online that has a 4X4 with a procharger on it and hes going trough the little 5 speeds like crazy. He cant keep them working and is always complaining about it.
Hes talking about putting in the bigger manual out of a super-duty.
