I'm on F150online also. I have pics of my truck on there. I'm 97 on 37s. I hate to hear that about the 5 speeds. Has anyone said anything about the t56s? I know they have like on downside with i think a spindle or something, but is all I know of.

Like Douglas Walker found-I'll bet you have a broken accumulator spring,or possibly a valvebody gasket with a torn/damaged corner.. You'll need a valvebody gasket, and fluid/filter at the least, possibly an accumulator spring.

Will this likely be the cause of a downshift issue as well? My truck revs to about 4000-4500 before it will kick down from 4th to 3rd if I do it abrubtly.

I found a torn/damaged valvebody gasket when we fixed this on my friend's truck. It was leaking fluid from around the valvebody causing a pressure loss and made it flare on downshifts.

Would a shift kit be a good option for me or would you suggest something different?

No shift "kits".
If you want the shifts crisped up-I can tell you how to do it.

The downshift problem is likely a bad valvebody to case gasket-Change it. If you want to firm up the 1-2 shift-remove the lower spring from the 1-2 shift accumulator, and leave the upper in place. If you want to firm up the 2-3 shift, remove ALL springs from the accumulator and reinstall just the accumulator in the bore.

Do you happen to have any pics or illistrations that show me what I have to do. Or maybe point me to a place that can show me?
