I have a 88 Bronco with a 351 c6 combo. Im thinking about installing a towing camshaft. Has anyone out there done this to there Bronco and were there any gas mileage increases or noticeable torque gains. I really dont think theres much you can do for fuel mileage. My Bronco gets poor fuel mileage empty or towing. Especially towing. I havent done any research on what grinds are available for the stock EFI but I dont want my fuel mileage to drop. Also wanting to put 33-35 inch tall tires on it with small lift. Any recommendations are welcome. Thanks
Comp cams 35-255-5 is about all that's available for that motor over the counter right now, but it will also benefit greatly from a set of longtube headers and a 2.5" single exhaust.
headers, custom or bassani y pipe and hi flow converter will help. if you plan on going with that size tires i would for sure regear before the cam change. otherwise i think you will be disappointed in the performance from just a cam change.
since you have a C6 4.10's for 33's and 4.56 for 35's. this will help towing a bunch.
If a towing cam is more readily available for the 289/302, a camshaft for those small blocks will work in the 351W, you will just need to use the 15426378 firing order.
If you're ever in the mood for a project, a nice setup would be to swap in a '94+ 351W with the factory roller cam, heads with some bowl cleanup and minor port work done, long tubes, 2.5" duals with crossover, and bolt on a performer intake with a 600 or 650 Holley carb.
Thanks guys for the suggestions. Right now I think im just going to do a 410 gear swap and headers. My exhaust is needing replacing anyway and now is as good a time as any. Would there be major gains between a short header versus a long header. My thinking is a short header may hook up to the factory y-pipe and it would cause no starter or front axle problems. If I keep the stock y-pipe I would still replace the cat with a high flow cat. I need to keep my fuel injection to keep it street legal. I was looking a hedman shorty headers from summit racing and they look real close to the design of stock manifolds. Im wanting the exhaust to exit in front of the rear tire and with long headers, y-pipe, cat and muffler there isnt much room to play with. Thanks for any more ideas or suggestions
part of the bottle neck in the exhaust is the Y pipe. talk to some exhaust shops and see what they would charge for a custom 2.5" Y into 3" cat then run out stock location. I do not recommend having the exhaust exit in front of the rear tires. placing exhaust in this spot will put it at risk of being damaged.
Right now my exhaust runs straight out the back and when the rear glass is down or cracked I cant breath from all the exhaust fumes. I would like to remove the top and cruise around this summer without the fumes. Will exiting the exhaust behind the right rear tire solve this? If I remember correctly the pipe was level to the ground and not pointed down in the stock location. Thanks
the exhaust should turn out right after the rear tire. should never be ran strait out the back on the bronco for that very reason. Duals are also a waste as you get no performance gain due to all the bends needed to get around the tcase and such.
i run shorties and like them personally. and if i ever do an SAS they can stay. vs a long tube will have interference issues. they do anyway in some cases so for me it wasnt worth the hassle.
