ok so this is kinda off topic but i figure there is more custom metal crafters here than anywhere else. sooo i have an 89 ranger ext cab. its gunna be a project for me with a 4 inch lift and cool bumpers, custom bed, and maybe a 4.6l v8. Any ways i really hate the dash in it. its just all new and plastic and looks bad. So that leaves me two options build a custom dash or swap one out of something else. if i build one it would probably styled much like a full out prerunner style one and if swap one it would probably be out of a 75 f150 and sliced and diced to fit. So whatcha guys think and if anyone has any sweet pics of dashes post um up might give me some ideals.
Sounds like it could be interesting. I to like the gauges in the 73-79 trucks, but keep in mind that the plastic housing desintigrate and its virtually impossible to find a decent one. You can by a new housing for a pretty penny. I also like the 67-72 truck gauges.
Over on the HAMB awhile back there was this guy who used a valve cover from an old Buick straight 8 for a dash in his roadster....it looked really cool.
When my metal skills get a bit better I plan on trying to adapt the gauge cluster from a 1958 Pontiac into my 49
I hadn't seen that. Look at the metal work he did on the doors to make it match. Wow.
I need alot more practice before tackling that.
Locally (at least to me) there is an early 50's Chevy with one of those funky Chrysler cone shaped dashes from the early 60's;
The truck also has an early hemi...its pretty cool for a chevy
wow those are some neat dashes keep them coming and as far as the plastic surrounds on the f150 dash goes that wont apply. as if i do use it i will just use it a just a base to build off of. I will build a custom gauge panel to mount aftermarket gauges and stuff in.
That Chrysler dash looks sharp! I'm planning to redo my F7 dash. Since it now has a 12V conversion, and I found a late 60's c-cab cluster with the OEM air gauge, I'm going to shave the ash tray, slide the speaker grille to the right, and weld this in the remaining area:
The air pressure gauge should sit right where the 4 gauge cluster now is, and everything else should drop into place. Hopefully the ribbed panel between the newsed gauges will match up well with the speaker grille pattern, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Here is the proposed "save" portion to weld into the existing dash:
If anyone needs an ash tray or gauges, I think there are some on ebay
Great Idea since this is going be what comes out of your imagination anyway. Can you post a picture of the merc dash? Would like to get some idea of what you are working with.
I have the problem of having to convert my 49 COE dash to right hand drive. so i have found that a 40 Ford deluxe dash will fit nicely with a little slicing and dicing.
After i get done making room and mounting points for the A/C unit, wipers, computers and trans controller and related wiring panels i can go ahead and weld the dash itself in.
I will try and post some pictures when i get that far. The 40 dash gives me that art deco sort of a look i was looking for. John

John I was thinking of dropping the COE cab on a 1980'S Mail Jeep frame using everything from the jeep.
It has the steering wheel on the right and the frame is not to long, the only problem is that the wheelbase is too short making the coe top heavy but I been toying with the Idea of welding an extra wall to the mail jeep frame to make the wheel base bigger(do I MAKE SENSE?)
Please post pictures of your progress
