The "base" that the pedal should attach to has a horizontally running post, grooved for two c-clips, and somehow there's a weird spring-type-thing involved.
If anyone has, or can take some pics of how the setup should look, or even talk me through it, I'd surely appreciate it.
Sammy, I can't help you here, but I would like to have the answer to the same question. I have the same setup. I found the gas pedal in the glovebox. Obviously the PO tossed it in there when it fell off. I cant imagine getting snaprings on there unless you unbolted the pedal assembly. I got the pedal centered on the shaft and bent the ears in to the middle. It's been working just fine, but I know it's not right.
Sounds to me like you are referring to a 65, the 66 is attached from above.
1965 F100/250 2WD: There are two different gas pedals / I'm assuming the OP's truck is 2WD. 4WD is not the same.

This pedal is suspended. The spring the OP is refering to fits on the backside of the rubber pedal pad to allow it to spring back into position.
The rubber pedal pad by itself (C5AZ9735D) also fits 1965/67 Galaxie/LTD & 1966/77 Bronco.
The gas pedal spring (C5AZ9C804B) also fits: 1965/68 Galaxie/LTD / 1966/77 Bronco / 1968/71 Thunderbird / 1969/71 Mark III / 1971/72 Maverick/Comet/Mustang/Cougar.
1967/72 F100/350: The pedal assy (C7TZ9725N); rubber pedal pad (C5ZZ9735D); and spring (C5ZZ9760B) are not the same.
