Hey guys yesterday I was driving my truck to work and all of a sudden the abs light came on and the speedo quit working,so i changed the sensor at the top of the rear end and it still didn't fix it,so it there another speed sensor maybe in my transfer case or transmission? My truck is a 1997 f350 with a 5.8 and e40d trans. Thanks for any help or input. Also the od light was flashing,so could this be a bad sensor or maybe a short, because it all of a sudden was working this morning, but whenever i hit a bump it quit working so i'm kind of leaning towards maybe a short, thanks again.
Yes that's the one in the rear end. Sounds like you have a chaffed or almost broken wire under there. Also did you look down inside the rearend to see if the exciter ring was still in place when you had the VSS out. It's prob ok but it's best to cover all bases.
My speedo intermittently cuts out too, along with the odometer, but i found that a swift fist to the dashboard and it pops back on. I have been narrowing it down to possibly the psom attached to the back of the cluster (with the technical assistance from SUBFORD) gotta give props when they're due.
well I checked off the wiring off the top of the differential and they were all good.So with the advice while I was driving I whacked the dash, but nothing.ABS light still on and still no speedo. So is there actually another sensor on the top or side of the tranny, cause I sure as hell cannot find it.And if not would the psom or whatever it is be taking a crap or in my case already dead?
You only have 1 (one) VSS, it is on the rear axle as you already know.. You might pull your cluster and check to see if any of the plugs are loose or corroded..
Good luck..

Ha ha. The force of positive persuasion. Works every time.
in your case I would say it is definatly the PSOM with 97 percent certainty because that is a very common problem on these trucks.
97FRD1TN has an ABS light and a blinking OD light that's why I didn't lean that way myself. A bit odd.
I assume you checked all fuses inside and out....?
Yes i sure did,all I can think of is maybe when I put the new sensor in that I didn't clean the diff well enough for the new vss to sit down properly.I was talking to someone tonight and he said they are very tempermental and sensitive and have to be within .003 of the gear inside the diff otherwise it won't pick up a signal.I hope this it because I am tired of chasing this ******* down and really don't feel like getting a new cluster.
