Factory Stereo Options

My factory stereo in my 94 F-150 has been acting up in the cold weather. Also it doesnt have a clock built in. is there another factory stereo that can plug in and will work for these trucks?

I tried a stereo out of a 96 cougar and it lite up and worked, but the speaker out plugins are different on the F-150 and cougar apparenly. But the input plug is the same.

Just looking for options. Not really wanting to put an aftermarket on in yet. Just want something cheap.

Thanks

This may not be all that helpful, but I would bet you can find and pull a factory stereo at the parts yard for your truck.

For any aftermarket, or other factory radio, the plug is going to be different. Assuming of course we are talking about the plug that connects all the wires to the back of the radio. You can work around this though. You will need to get a wiring diagram, which can be found here
1994 Ford F150 Truck Car Stereo Wiring Diagram
From there get some butt connectors and connect in whatever radio will fit the hole. It takes a little time, but is not a big deal to do.

All ford radios should have a clock.
Do you have the "old style" radio with *****? or the new one with buttons like this?
1994 F-150 Stock Radio - eBay (item 220554259267 end time Feb-16-10 15:49:15 PST)

I have one in my '91 and love it. A lot better than those older ones since the displays always go out.

I believe ALL 87-96 F-series radios wiring is the same, but the factory CD might be an exception.

I think you've made a mistake here...My Lincoln MK VII (a Ford product) still has the factory stereo. It does NOT have the clock with it...the clock is in the on-board computer display. My old '93 Escort didn't have one either...it was on the roof with the map lights.

I have a factory stereo with clock and tape deck. It was out of my 93 f-150 with 4 speakers. It worked perfectly, but I got a cd player and put that in instead. I will try to dig it out and send you some pics if you are interested. It has been kept in a box, safe and sound, but its hiding somewhere. Wait, I have another in my 1995 parts truck that I just have to pull out. I can have pics by the weekend.

I should've rephrased that, all truck radios have a clock. Well, unless you get one of those AM-only ones (I have one in my garage)
I have had 2 '88s and a '90 with the factory AM/FM radio, all had clocks. In fact, I don't believe you can switch the display off of clock. Wheras on the "new style" radios, you can have it on either one.
I got my radio cheap ($12) but as it turns out, the backlight doesn't work at night. But the cassette works great

well ford and all they newer trucks and different brand of truck use different kinds of hard nest to connect to the stereo unit. But you best bet is to mod the connection to fit to a stock radio from a different truck, or put a cheap one that will fit into it like from autozone or a junk yard or anything like that.

Its not hard to slap in an aftermarket. You dont need a wiring diagram, just match all the wires together, everything is color coded so its simple.

Just did this in my 97 F350 CC 4x4. Bought it without the radio, previous owner removed an aftermarket unit, left the original plugs and harnesses.
I wanted to use a factory radio with an amp. Took alot of research, as the ford radio's 1 din style have radios that need an amp and ones that don't. The ones that need the amp are the ones with the one long rectangular plug and one smaller near square plug in the back.
Ones that don't need an amp have two long rectangular plugs.
I bought an Explorer ebay radio for 40 bucks from this LMQ comapany - online wrecking yard I think. Got a real nice unit for thr 40, including shipping.
bought an ebay amp from a Windstar for 20 bucks, including shipping.
Wiring could have been a nightmare, except for my EVTM factory manual for my truck, and lots of online wiring info for the Windstar and Explorerer.

Turns out the wiring is basically the same over the years - as in position of the wires in the plugs - but all the colors change alot over the years.

Got my radio and amp in, works great. Not a $1,000 system nor has $1,000 system sound, but it is great for me - my hearing is pretty shot from years in construction anyway so I can't tell the difference.
