Some Ford 300 Six Crank info

I was talking to an 87 year old retired mechanic that loved the Ford 300 six engine and rebuilt a ton of them, he was very adament that if you want a 300 six motor that will last then you have to install a BRAND NEW STEEL CRANK, not a reground or a forged crank, he said it made a big difference in the longivity of the motor. He was a pretty smart old guy and said the bigger re grind you have on a crank the thicker the bearing has to be and the bearing being softer than the crank would loose tolerence and would cause lower oil pressure and the rods would pound the bearings to death. While I can see his point, I found a brand new Steel Crank to be pretty expensive but he really knew his stuff, he also said to used a new cam not a reground, I said what if I wanted a performance cam and he said just make sure the manufacturer is building them new and not welding stock ones up and re grinding them. He was a cantankerous old ******* who liked to argue his point... but I liked him.
