Crossover / Saddle tool box ?
Crossover / Saddle tool box ?
Since I took delivery of my 2010 XLT SCREW last week I figured it was time to order a box. Today I ordered a low profile Delta crossover single lid box. My question is how are they usually attached to the top rail? Thanks much
Some have a j-hook that will attach under the box to the rail. Some you will need to drill and bolt to the bed and I have seen Some people who load it full of tools and that nothing hole it but gravity to hold it in
Ha, I learned a long time ago not to trust gravity. I will have to wait till I drop it in as drilling the rail will be the last resort. Maybe I can fab up a block affair that fits up inside the top rail, yet will act like a twin J hook. Carrying work tools will be seldom, but tie downs, jumper cables, a tow sling, water, MREs, my skeet gear and a couple thousand dollars worth of shotguns is what the box is for.

I attached my box with J hooks as I didn't want to drill bed. Be careful of placement of box if single lid, some will scratch the rear of the cab as you open them. I was able to pick a gull wing box which worked out great as my truck came with those side steps, it works out nice. Never had side boxes. I just bought a Diamondback tonneau cover which makes the whole bed my tool box but still allows hauling of skid or a very bales of hay. Chris
Why would You even worry about drilling, when every time You reach into a crossover box Your risking scratches to the box side? (jeans/jacket buttons, zippers, etc.) Especially with a truck as high as these.
I hate crossovers, it almost always seems that whatever Your looking for is always out of reach. You end up climbing anyways.
Low profile saddle box's for Me.

I agree with Fiddy. I finally got rid of my crossover because of the frustration of having to climb in the bed to get what I needed.
I did see a guy who used c-clamps to pin 90 degree brackets up against his crossover. Pretty easy fix with no drilling but it doesn't look great.

That's why I like the side steps that came with the truck-I pop them out and I can no only reach every thing in my boxes but I don't worry about scratching up the truck sides. I don't think I would have ordered them but I really use them and they work. Chris
I've got Running Boards, and it seems worse with, than without. With them, You try harder to get that drill that slid to the middle of the box. Without them, there's no chance of reaching it without climbing into the box.
