2000 7.3 Powerstroke Not Starting

I’ve got a problem with my 2000 7.3 Powerstroke F250, 120k miles. At the beginning of winter with starting temps anywhere from 10 degrees below zero to 30 degrees, the engine would turn over after allowing the glow plugs to heat for multiple cycles (final cycle before starting between 1 an 2 minutes). The engine would not fire until I went through this process eight or ten times. Eventually it would start and lope for a while until it warmed up.

I figured I had a problem with worn glow plugs. Today I changed out the glow plugs, air and fuel filter. It started and ran well for five minutes before I shut it down. I went to start it again; it ran for a minute or two and quit. It felt as if it wasn’t getting fuel. It turns over, fires but won’t stay running. I pulled the fuel filter and turned the key to the on position – fuel is pumping fine into the bowl… or at least it seems like it is. The bowl filled right up. I’ve exhausted my knowledge at this point.
<O
Can anyone help? Thanks.

Check HiPressure oil resevior.

While unfamiliar with such low temps, when no start condition exists is not always "fuel" related. The injectors use solenoid controlled hi pressure engine oil to fire. Long crank-no start sessions tend to drain the resevior. Check oil level at o-ring sealed plug at front/center/top of engine, should be about 3/4 inch of top. Also if you have access to a live data scanner, observe ICP(injection control pressure)during cranking. Should be about 300-500psi, if I remember correctly. Hope this gives you another path with positive results.
if I am way off . . . please someone say so, i would hate to steer someone wrong.

might want to check on the crank postion sensor too. my pops quit running and we thought it to be a fuel problem. took it to the dealer and after they had it for a week they said nothing was wrong. picked it up made it down the street and it died. told them "the truck that didnt have anything wrong with it is broke down in the middle of the street" a tech came out pluged in a new CPS and havent had a problmem since. they had a recall on them too.

Thanks. I'll give them both a look.

Also, what is the possibility that air has gotten into the fuel system? I'm hearing funny noises as I turn the ignition to the on position prior to cranking. The noises sound like a strange gurgling. The engine will fire and then die, sometimes after a half second, sometimes after 4 or 5 seconds.

If air has infiltrated due to changing the fuel filter, how do I get it out?

that is exactley the sound i heard on my pops, was the gurgling..i swore it was the fuel pump..the truck drove fine down to the dealer. and it ended up being the stupid CPS. my friends dad is a tech at ford and he said that that was probably the problem even before we took it in. they wouldnt replace it cuz it didnt show any signs of being faulty, until it broke down in the middle of the street!!! my dads is a 2002, and we just received the recall on the CPS switch maybe a little over 1 1/2 ago.....

Don't have much to add for your other problem. But for the air, bump the rpms up to 1300-1500 or so to clear the air out if you can get it running long enough. I had to do this when I installed my FRx. It was idling all weird and shaking a bit. Raising the rpm should help push the air out faster than at idle. Some say fuel flow at idle isn't fast enough to get a lot of the air out.
