Badges? We don't have any badges! We don't have to show you any stinkin' badges!

This well known quote...was originally spoken by Gold Hat (Alfonso Bedoya) to Fred C. Dobbs (Bogie) - Treasure of the Sierra Madre (WB: 1948).

Think kiddo think. What would a Camper Special have...that would not have come on other models?

Camper Specials had two items that were specific to these trucks only. You could not have one without the other.

Most people today haven't a clue what these two items are.

Since there is no way to define a Camper Special from other models by the VIN or codes on the Warranty Plate, this is an EZ model to fake.

Only someone that knows the score...can tell if it's a real Camper Special or not.

You gotta either look in the glove box (though by now...what was there originally...is prolly long gone). Or crawl under...and then take a look-see.

btw: Ford did not offer their own Camper until 1973.

Even though it had Ford badges on it, it was actually made by Open Road. It had a molded fiberglass outer skin, and didn't sell worth a hoot.

Ford dis-continued it at the end of the 1976 model run.

Ford did make their own Motor Homes in 1973/76, the M450/500 Series. All were assembled at the KY truck plant. These didn't sell worth a hoot, either.

Bill, I'll take a stab, from old memories of my first Slick. I see 2 possibilities:
1. The rear axle had stiffening rods welded to the bottom.
2. The rear springs had what I refer to as "helper" springs, an extra, shorter stack above the regular set of leaves.

Am I close?

In the glove box would there be a sticker or tag with different air pressures for the tires? I'm at a loss about what to look for on the bottom side.

I never knew that. I just checked your info in your gallery, very nice. I realize what Bill is saying about a camper special, but am I correct that majority of them had the bigger suspension and bells and whistles? Least ways that is how it appears down here in the south. I would really like to see what the 2 grill guards really look like from ford.

Did Ford supply a camper wiring "pigtail" or a CS pamphlet in the glovebox ?

cs65,
Do you know what was in the glovebox?

but not all camper specials got the camper wiring harness, or at least, that's what don's paperwork says.

Well, it says... Wiring Harness-Camper (when available)

I would take that to mean that not all got it.

I should have remembered the additional wiring harness - my Camper Special had it, I harvested 2 or 3 in the last 5 years, and installed one in my Slick.

I have seen 2 types:
1. A single harness that includes wiring for both ammeter and ALT light, and oil pressure gauge and OIL light. This one includes additional wiring (for what I do not recall) all going through a single rubber grommet. Factory installed?
2. A separate harness for just the ammeter and pressure gauge. Dealer installed?

Bingo!
At final assembly, FoMoCo put a pigtailed wiring harness/plug inside the glove box.

This pigtailed harness/plug...was used for lamps inside the camper.

It plugged into the Camper Special only taillamp harness, which had an extra wire just for this purpose.

Everything else that came with the Camper Special package, could be ordered for other models.

Poor wording

Number Dummy, I worded that wrong and I knew better on what came on a Camper Special . It could lead some people to believe that I was saying those were standard on a Camper Special. Here is better wording.

"I have a 66 F100 Camper Special, it has the extra gauges correct for a Camper Special and is a 352/COM truck. Options above and beyond the Camper Special package include door pockets, bed toolbox and the factory optional grille guard on a painted bumper. An extra gas tank was added on driver side AFTER it left the factory."

I have finally created a gallery and added pics of the Camper Special including the grille guard. It does have the support bars going through the grille. The grille is not cut for this that I can tell, standard aluminum grille.

C6TZ8307A .. GrIlle Guard / 1966 F100/350.

Original MSRP: $32.90.

1965 is slightly different (C5TZ8307A), as is 1964 (C4TZ8307PAK).

BlueBolt,
Didn't, however, the radiator support have to have openings cut to allow the grille guard supports to pass through to the frame?
