I agree with V10KLZ. The only way to replace just the Y-pipe (and not the manifolds) is to have it custom made. There are aftermarket Y-pipes available if you purchase headers to fit them, but these will not fit the stock manifolds.
I remember seeing a photo of a truck with a custom Y-pipe and the owner said that he had good results.
I purchased a set of Banks headers and they came with a replacement Y-pipe. They are great!!! But they are a bit pricey if all you want to do is get rid of the Y-pipe...
Hope you have good results whichever way you choose.
I had my friend that ownes a exaust shop cut out the y pipe and redue it with bigger pipe.Sounds better and went up a mile per gallon.Costs about 50 to 60 clams.
So you are the one with the modified "Y" pipe ! I saw a post by you that referenced a picture on your gallery. Because of the changes on the site I can't find your gallery. Do you have pictures posted somewhere else ? On the way home today I stopped by a muffler shop and had a Flowmaster 70 series installed.........Sweet ! Just a little louder than stock, and really helped with the low end power. Can't wait to check the MPG. While at the muffler shop the guy looked at making a custom "Y" pipe for me. He was going to use 2.5 inch pipe from the manifolds all the way back to the beginning of the cat, where he was going to make a collector that was 4 inches in dia. and bolted to the cat flange. It sounded really good but he didn't have time to fabricate it today. He wants $100 to build this beast.
In your opinion is it worth the change in performance?
I do think it was worth the money. Most people have said that just the flowmaster alone does not show that great of a gain in milage. In my case, with the modified y pipe and the flowmaster i did see a 2mpg increase and even a little better on the hiway.
As far as the pictures im not shure where they went.I could e-mail them to you if you would like.
its a cheap mod IMOP.Go for it!
Please give us a little more info on your truck. What year, how many miles, what was the milage before and after the y-pipe/exhaust change (city, mixed, highway)? Did you calculate the milage or are you relying on the trip computer?
Its been a while since you made the change - do you still like it - any problems with flutter?
This seems to be a significant change for the amount of $$$ involved. Sounds like something I might want to do. Folks have spent a whole lot more $$$ for much less gain.
Currently, I am stock and getting 11-12 around town and 14-15 highway. I have 5100 miles on my truck and love it.
anything you can share will be greatly appreciated.
In reference to flutter, when I installed my FlowMaster 70 series last week my flutter disappeared. My first acceleration in the morning at 1800 RPM's the flutter was so bad you couldn't hear the radio. Now it's so quite It's un-believeable. I had tried everything to get rid of it, including removing the heat shields from the "Y" and silicone the bellhousing close out plate. My truck also seems to have more low end torque, and better acceleration. I would like to install headers, but with the kitchen renovation no $$$ currently. I still plan on cutting out Ford's "pretezel" pipe, and installing a nice flowing "Y" pipe.
Maybe "Nickdoni" will just back in on this discussion.
Garymake.I have a 2001F350,Clubcab,4x4,lariet,V-10.As far as mods i put on a k+n air filter, flowmaster 40,Modified y pipe.I have a leveling kit and 33x12.50 bfg all terranes.I did the y pipe at about 12,000 miles. Now i have 33,000.When i did a milage check,i filled the tank and wrote down the odometer reading. Then filed the tank a couple days later and did the math.To my suprise the trip thing was very close. On the hiway i get 15mpg compared to 13mpg before the y mod and muffler. In the city i only gained about 1mpg.(i have a heavy foot).Dont for get i have oversized tires. You may see better gaines.Good luck

Is there any way that you could get some pictures so that I can take them to the muffler shop and show them what needs to be done.
One suggestion though. It would be wise to find a muffler shop that has stainless tubing for this job. The high exhaust temps. and moisture will rot even aluminized steel tubing in a short time. I had a local shop order a 10' length of 2.5" stain. tubing for me, and paid almost $9 per foot. Expensive but well worth it.
I suppose the amount of money it would cost to certify an aftermarket Y pipe, and make it cost effective is simply not worth it. Although I would be the first in line to buy one.
The latest Summit catalog has a FlowMaster "Y" pipe section in it. Catalog # N12104 page 59 Item FLO-Y250300A. It combines two 2.5 inch inputs into one 3.0 inch outlet, and looks to be about 12 to 18 inches long. It looks like the exhaust gas would flow really well in this set up. You would still need to add custom bent pipes from just below the exhaust manifold to this "Y". I believe I can fit this "Y" to the flange just forward of the cat. I had an estimate from a muffler shop to build a "Y" for $100.00. Most of that cost was actually cutting and fitting the sections to form the "Y". I paid $37.95 for the section from Summit. I should be able to get the pipes bent and welded for $40.00. Believe this will be cheaper and flow better. Anyway I ordered one. I'll let you know how it works out.
