Hello,
I have the original 360 under the hood in my Ford Vern. I have been having an issue of late. When I gas up or any other time that I shut him off for a short time. When I restart, the starting system acts like it's not going to spin the fly wheel. It sounds like the battery is going dead for two or three seconds then the starter engages the flywheel and he fires up. I have a charging indicator gauge that works and I can see the alternator is recharging the battery after I fire him up.
I also replaced the cable to the starter ensured the lugs were crimped tightly and all connections are tight, battery cables and etc. I even bought a new battery. If he is shutdown for a couple hours or more there is no issue at all.
If anyone has a suggestion Vern & I would certainly appreciate it.
Thanks
It's obvious it's a hot start problem so my guess would be a) the timing is too far advanced or b) the starter is dragging from too much electrical resistance due to heat soak i.e. the starter is going bad, my best guess is it's the latter.
Yeah, I agree that it sounds like a problem inside the starter itself. The solenoid is hanging up and sticking when it's hot. It may be mechanically binding and/or the solenoid coil may be electrically weakened (partially shorted internally) from age. The pulling power is marginal when cold, and less than marginal when hot.
You can pull it apart yourself and see if there's anything obvious, or just swap it for a rebuilt one. Starters aren't hard to work on, but you have to weigh the cost of individual parts and your time versus the cost of a whole rebuilt one.
